Avenue.io Inc. is seeking an Aquatics Instructor I to deliver safe, engaging swim lessons in our Calgary facility. The role reports to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor and follows Lifesaving Society and CAR standards.

Work hours can include days/evenings/weekends/holidays, with a predictable end date of July 25, 2027. Responsibilities include planning lessons, demonstrating techniques, assessing progress, and maintaining records.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years old.
• 1–6 months of previous experience.
• Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification and a valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C/AED.
• Availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Preference given to applicants who hold Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner/CPR-I, National Lifeguard Instructor certifications.

Responsibilities

• Plan and implement swimming lessons in accordance with Lifesaving Society and facility program standards to ensure participant progress and safety.
• Demonstrate proper swimming techniques and rescue skills for various ages and abilities.
• Adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs and maintain participant engagement.
• Evaluate participant performance through regular assessment and provide constructive feedback.
• Supervise swimmers during lessons to prevent incidents and respond promptly to emergencies.
• Communicate lesson progress, programs, schedules, policies, and safety expectations to participants and guardians.
• Complete lesson plans, progress cards, evaluation sheets and attendance records accurately and on time.
• Maintain current certifications and participate in in-service training.

About the Role

Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department, these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end July 25, 2027 and require the ability to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor, the Aquatics Instructor I provides safe and fun swim lessons to all participants. They must do so in accordance with the Lifesaving Society and CAR standards.

Responsibilities

Swim Instruction

• Plan and implement swimming lessons in accordance with the Lifesaving Society and facility program standards to ensure participant progress and safety.


• Demonstrate proper swimming techniques and rescue skills effectively for various ages and abilities.


• Adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs and maintain participant engagement.


• Evaluate participant performance through regular assessment, providing constructive feedback to support skill development.


• Supervise swimmers during lessons to prevent incidents and respond promptly to emergencies.

Customer Service and Public Relations

• Communicate with participants and parents/guardians regarding lesson progress, programs, schedules, policies, and safety expectations.


• Support community initiatives that enhance public awareness of water safety and recreation opportunities.

Administrative and Professional Development

• Complete lesson plans, progress cards, evaluation sheets and attendance records accurately and on time.


• Maintain current certifications.


• Participate in in-service training sessions to remain updated on procedures, policies, and instructional best practices.


• Willing and able to share ideas and take constructive criticism.


• Assist with special events or tasks as needed.
