Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for a highly motivated Aquatic Sciences Crew Lead to join our Aquatics Team on a hourly contract basis. The ideal candidate has extensive experience implementing freshwater and marine ecosystem assessments and monitoring programs and is familiar with federal and provincial legislation relating to aquatic ecosystems. Experience leading field programs in accordance with provincial guidance is required. Work tasks may include construction support (e.g., environmental monitoring, fish and wildlife salvages, water quality measurements), field sampling for water or sediment, fish capture, habitat measurements/characterization, daily field reports, safety documentation, data entry and management, and reporting. The expected start date of this position is July 2025. This position will be hired initially for a six (6) week contract with the potential of extension.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead fish, aquatic resource and/or water quality components of projects

  • Design and lead field sampling programs in accordance with provincial guidance, such as RISC standards, or other standard methods employed by Stantec

  • Understand current techniques for sampling and analysis of aquatic resource data from streams, rivers and lakes

  • Support environmental management and construction monitoring projects

  • Complete quality and completeness checks on field data

  • Support technical report writing and environmental permit applications

  • Comply with Stantec's quality and independent review process

  • Prioritize safety in all tasks

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience conducting biological field surveys with methods such as, minnow trapping, beach seining, fish identification, sediment sampling, and the use of tools such as water quality meters

  • Able to lead field crews working in collaborative team environment, under deadlines in remote wilderness settings

  • Proven technical, communication, writing, and organization skills

  • Strong interpersonal and social skills, including in-person and online collaboration

  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills

  • Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and solve problems in the field

  • Willingness to be away from home, staying in hotels or camps, working 12-hour days (including evenings and weekends) under a variety of conditions for 14 days at a time or longer

  • Able to lift and move equipment up to 23kg (50lbs) (i.e., carrying field equipment and samples)

  • Able to endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude

  • Familiarity with ESRI field data collection products

  • Proficiency with technology including the Microsoft suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint)

Education and Experience

  • Application of federal and provincial legislation and regulations and municipal bylaws in an environmental consulting context, such as regulatory requirements for aquatic environments or water and sediment quality guidelines

  • Applicants must be registered with the British Columbia College of Applied Biology as an R.P.Bio.

  • A minimum of a B.Sc. in a biological or environmental field plus at least five years of work experience, or M.Sc. in a relevant field that included field work.

  • Experience leading field crews is required. Experience developing field program components is an asset.

  • Relevant consulting experience is required.

  • Familiarity with federal and provincial legislation, such as the Fisheries Act and the Water Sustainability Act.

  • The following are assets: electrofishing certificate; Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement certificate; UTV training; Pleasure Craft Operator Card; Swiftwater Rescue Technician; Marine Emergency Duties A1.

Stantec British Columbia's standard work week is 37.5 hours. This position is eligible for overtime in the office and field for hours worked in accordance with British Columbia's labour laws. Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation. Field work may include exposure to inclement weather, and travel through rough and remote terrain, while carrying equipment.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

• Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC - Min Salary $ 74,700.00 - Max Salary $ 108,300.00

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
