Job summary

The City of Toronto is seeking a technical support specialist to address Application, Desktop Software, Hardware, Network Connections, Printers, Security and Access Management. The role involves travel to off-site locations and a hybrid work model based on business needs.

Responsibilities include prioritizing workload, evaluating options, coordinating with teams, and delivering training and documentation. Requires a post-secondary degree or equivalent, strong troubleshooting and customer service

Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Degree/Diploma in computer science or related discipline or the approved equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Considerable experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and resolving issues with desktop software, hardware, network connections, printers and multifunction devices.
  • Considerable experience with LAN/WAN technology and network hardware/software/OS (Windows etc.).
  • Considerable experience with desktop applications (M365 Suite etc.).
  • Considerable experience providing in-person and over-the-phone technical support.

Job Description

To provide technical support related to Application, Desktop Software, Hardware, Network Connections, Printers, Security & Access Management and Server Supports in addressing opportunities/challenges. These temporary, full-time positions involve travel to off-site locations and working in office with the opportunity for hybrid work model based on business needs.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Schedules workload and set priorities.
  • Provides expertise in assessment, analysis, evaluation of alternatives and resolution of issues & problems in assigned areas.
  • Liaises and co-ordinates with internal & external groups on resolution of problems.
  • Recommends preventative solutions to mitigate recurrence of similar problems.
  • Develops and recommends improvements to current environment, policies & processes.
  • Acquires and disposes of hardware and software.
  • Monitors and maintains access and security of data and infrastructure.
  • Advises desktop configuration management teams on hardware & software technologies and deployment alternatives.
  • Advises network management teams on hardware & software technologies, connectivity and backup & recovery alternatives.
  • Advises security management & control teams on security-related technologies and access control alternatives.
  • Performs capacity planning.
  • Prepares training material for coaching clients.
  • Provides training to clients in use of technology.
  • Prepares statistics and drafts summary reports.
  • Prepares documentation to facilitate transfer of knowledge.
  • Supports the centralized management of access control.
  • Installs and rolls out application, hardware and/or software and takes inventory of assets and maintains asset management.
  • Travels to off-site locations and support other offices.
Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Post Secondary Degree/Diploma in computer science or related discipline or the approved equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Considerable experience in diagnosing, troubleshooting and resolving issues with desktop software, hardware, network connection printers and multi-function devices.
  • Considerable experience with LAN/WAN technology and network hardware, software and operating systems (i.e. Windows, desktop, configuration, etc.).
  • Considerable experience with desktop applications (i.e. M365 Suite, etc.).
  • Considerable experience providing in-person and over the phone technical support.
You must also have:
  • Excellent technical, organizational, problem solving, multi-tasking skills with the ability to set priorities, co-ordinate a diverse workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Knowledge and understanding of systems and network hardware and software such as, Ethernet, IP, routers, switches, and network management tools (e.g. virus protection and server monitoring), multi-function devices, and printers.
  • Ability to lift/move equipment/boxes up to 30 kg.
  • Ability to support and/or report to various work sites.
  • General knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation. Knowledge of social assistance business practices and delivery systems, such as SAMS may be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team setting and/or project environment.
