Job summary

University Health Network seeks an Anesthesia Assistant to provide and assist with anesthetic care under medical directives. The role supports OR, peri-operative and post-operative units at Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals, with 37.5 hours weekly and a mix of weekday/weekend shifts.

The position is a replacement, non-union, permanent full-time opportunity offering professional development within a leading Canadian hospital network. Closing date is November 15, 2026.

Qualifications

• Must be registered with the appropriate Ontario college.
• Completion or enrollment in Michener Institute Anesthesia Assistant Program or equivalent.
• CCAA designation, or in the process of acquiring.
• BCLS & ACLS certification, or in process of acquiring.
• Previous experience in critical care or operating rooms as a RT or RN.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the care of surgical patients during general, regional or local anesthesia.
• Provide Anesthetic Support for the OR, Peri-Operative & Post-Operative Units
• Coordinate patient treatment plan with multi-disciplinary teams
• Institute/maintain Anesthesia Care Plan and/or provide anesthesia support, including gases and medications
• Conscious sedation and management of IV/arterial lines
• Monitor depth of anesthesia under supervision of the Anesthesiologist
• Assist with anesthesia crisis management and provide training to teams

Position Summary

Working under the direction of an Anesthesiologist the Anesthesia Assistant provides and/or assists with all aspects of the anesthetic care of the surgical and non-surgical patient by the authority of medical directives, best practice protocols and policies, and written or verbal orders. Anesthesia Assistants are integral members of the Operating Room (OR) and Peri-Operative/Post-Operative teams.

Duties

• Participate in the care of surgical patients during general, regional or local anesthesia
• Provide Anesthetic Support for the Operating Room, Peri-Operative & Post-Operative Units
• Coordinate patient treatment plan(s) with multi-disciplinary team(s)
• Institute/maintain Anesthesia Care Plan and/or provide anesthesia support, including but not limited to administering anesthetic gases and medications
• Perform activities such as the provision of conscious sedation; responsible for insertion and management of intravenous and arterial lines
• Constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia, all under the supervision of the Anesthesiologist, and with the use of medical directives or orders, as applicable
• Assists with anesthesia crisis management, as required
• Provides coaching/training/simulations to multi-disciplinary teams

Qualifications

• Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) & Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.) program, or in process of acquiring
• Ability to perform without direct supervision
