Job summary

Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto is seeking an Anesthesia Assistant to provide advanced respiratory care within the operating room. The role engages in direct patient care under anesthesia, supports the anesthesia team, and contributes to departmental workflow.

The ideal candidate has extensive critical care and OR experience, with required CRTO/CNO licensure and BLS; ACLS preferred. This position emphasizes teaching, research involvement, and commitment to patient safety within a community

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, Nursing program, or recognized equivalent is required.
  • Current license with the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario (CRTO) or College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is required.
  • Completion of accredited Anesthesia Assistant Advanced Program is required.
  • Certified in BLS is required.
  • ACLS certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced respiratory care as established by regulatory bodies.
  • Assist anesthesia team in care of stable surgical patients under general, regional or local anesthesia.
  • Monitor depth of anesthesia and respond to urgent or emergent events.
  • Contribute to teaching, education and research within the department.
  • Support patient and departmental workflow and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in trials, evaluations and research projects as required.

The Anesthesia Assistant in their role will be located at the TEHN Surgical Centre (located at 20 Wynford Dr.). The incumbent may be assigned toMichael Garron Hospital (825 Coxwell Avenue) as required.


The Anaesthesia Assistant is responsible and accountable to the Manager of the Operating room for the provision of advanced respiratory care as established by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, College of Nurses and the standards of respiratory care of this hospital. As an advanced practitioner, the


Anesthesia Assistant provides clinical and technical assistance in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional or local anesthesia.


The Anaesthesia Assistant provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiologist and with the use of medical directives, as applicable. As an integral member of the surgical team, the Anesthesia Assistant holds accountabilities for professional practice, education and research.



SALARY

The salary range for this role is $48.73/hour- $60.87/hour.


As a new employee, you may be eligible for Credit for Experience to progress your salary on the wage scale for your position, in accordance with the collective agreement relevant to your position.



EDUCATION


  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, Nursing program, or recognized equivalent is required.

  • Current license with the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario (CRTO) or College of Nurses of


Ontario (CNO) is required.



  • Completion of accredited Anesthesia Assistant Advanced Program is required.

  • Certified in BLS is required.

  • Certified in ACLS is preferred.



Qualifications


  • Minimum 5 years experience in a Critical Care setting.

  • Minimum 2 years recent Operating Room experience preferred.

  • Minimum 1-2 years experience in an Anesthesia Assistant role required

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in the followingskills:

  • Airway Management / Intubation / LMA insertion

  • Management of difficult airways, using adjunctive devices and specialty devices, including and not limited to, Peripheral IV insertion, Arterial Line insertion, Ophthalmology conscious sedation, and Regional blocks

  • Demonstrates management and troubleshooting of various types of anaesthesia gas machines

  • Responsible for performing Point of care testing

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to expected, urgent and emergent events.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary team to



  • Supports and contributes to managing the patient and departmental workflow.

  • Participate in teaching and presentation of in-service programs as required.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team in planning, delivering and evaluating service delivery through



  • Participate in trials, evaluations, and research projects as required

  • Experience with cell salvage an asset.

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning.

  • Good work and attendance record required.

  • Maintains recordsand workload statistics.

  • Maintain a healthy and safe work environment.
