Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an AML Investigator based in Canada.

As an AML Investigator, you will play a key role in protecting the integrity and security of a global digital asset trading environment. You will investigate unusual and potentially suspicious activities, assess financial crime risks, and determine whether cases require regulatory reporting or can be closed with documented justification. Working within an international Compliance team, you will collaborate with fellow investigators, legal professionals, and customer support specialists to address money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, and sanctions-related risks. You will use blockchain analytics tools and investigative techniques to identify suspicious transaction patterns and understand complex financial activities. This role combines independent decision-making, analytical thinking, and regulatory expertise in a fast-paced cryptocurrency environment. You will also have opportunities to deepen your knowledge of blockchain technology and contribute to strengthening global financial crime prevention practices.

Accountabilities
  • Conduct thorough investigations into unusual and potentially suspicious activities referred to the Compliance team, ensuring timely and effective case resolution within applicable regulatory deadlines.

  • Assess financial crime risks, including money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, and sanctions violations, within digital asset transactions and customer activities.

  • Determine whether investigated cases warrant the submission of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) or Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs), or whether referrals should be closed as non-suspicious with clear, evidence-based justification.

  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports in accordance with applicable legal requirements and jurisdiction-specific reporting timelines.

  • Recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures, including account closures, restrictions, or freezing of funds where necessary and legally applicable.

  • Use blockchain analytics platforms and investigative methodologies to trace transactions, identify suspicious patterns, and assess exposure to illicit financial activities.

  • Provide investigative support to Customer Support, Legal, and other internal teams when handling complex customer cases or requests.

  • Communicate effectively with customers, relevant representatives, and internal legal professionals as required during investigations.

  • Collaborate closely with the Head of the Investigation Team, Chief Compliance Officer, fellow AML Investigators, and other Compliance stakeholders to ensure consistent and effective risk management.

  • Maintain accurate investigation records, document findings, and provide clear reasoning behind decisions and recommendations.

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with industry peers to exchange knowledge, investigative techniques, and best practices.

  • Continuously strengthen expertise in blockchain technology, virtual currencies, emerging financial crime trends, criminal methodologies, and regulatory developments.

  • Contribute to maintaining robust AML/CTF and sanctions compliance standards across the organization.

Requirements:
  • Previous experience in an investigative function, preferably within financial services, cryptocurrency, banking, fintech, or regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated experience in Anti-Money Laundering (AML), including Customer Due Diligence (CDD), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), AML/CTF investigations, sanctions screening, and SAR/STR reporting.

  • Practical experience using blockchain analytics and investigation tools such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic, or equivalent platforms.

  • Basic understanding of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, virtual assets, and digital asset transactions, with the willingness to develop deeper technical expertise.

  • Strong knowledge of financial crime risks, including money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, and sanctions-related activities.

  • University degree or equivalent academic background is preferred.

  • Professional AML certifications, such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) or Certified Bitcoin Professional (CBP), are considered an advantage.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear investigative reports and communicate findings effectively.

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and decision-making abilities, particularly when assessing complex or ambiguous cases.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies, suspicious patterns, and potential compliance risks.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple investigations while meeting regulatory deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and seek guidance when necessary.

  • Flexibility regarding working arrangements and hours, with availability aligned with European time zones.

  • High levels of integrity, accountability, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive information.

  • A proactive approach to continuous learning and professional development in the evolving cryptocurrency and financial crime prevention landscape.

Benefits:
  • Flexible working arrangements within a remote-friendly international working environment.

  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience and expertise.

  • European time-zone working hours.

  • Mentorship and knowledge-sharing opportunities with experienced compliance and investigation professionals.

  • Career development opportunities within the cryptocurrency, blockchain, and financial compliance industries.

  • Continuous learning and professional development to strengthen technical and investigative expertise.

  • Collaborative and supportive international team environment.

  • Opportunities to exchange investigative knowledge and best practices with industry peers.

  • Team-building activities and opportunities to connect with colleagues.

  • Online and in-person social activities.

  • Opportunity to contribute to financial innovation while helping protect the integrity of the global digital asset ecosystem.
