Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is seeking part-time Ambulance Communications Officers for the Kingston Central Ambulance Communications Centre. You will handle 911 and non-emergency requests, dispatch ambulances, provide pre-arrival instructions, and monitor paramedic crews while maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.

The role requires advanced English, a minimum 35 wpm typing speed, post-secondary education preferred, and successful completion of mandatory training with on-the-job

Responsibilities

Job Description

The Ambulance Communications Officer provides services in a manner consistent with KHSC Mission, Vision and Values and that reflect the core values of Patient and Family Centred Care (dignity, respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration). Central Ambulance Communications Centers (CACCs) are mission critical, technologically complex workplaces providing the initial access point to Ontario’s emergency health services systems for victims of illness or injury.

The job of an Ambulance Communications Officer requires critical thinking skills and the ability to work under pressure in stressful situations. They are responsible for;

  • Taking 911, emergency, and non-emergency requests for ambulance services, locating patients, determining the severity of the medical emergency, and providing pre-arrival instructions before the Ambulance arrives.
  • Dispatching the closest Ambulance in time to an emergency call, providing Paramedic crews withaddress information, call details and for monitoring Paramedic crews for the duration of each call.
  • Standard First Aid
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary education program (i.e. university degree or minimum 2 year college diploma) preferred.
  • Advanced oral and written English skills.
  • Demonstrated typing speed at a minimum of 35 wpm (with 90% accuracy)
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must pass a general aptitude test.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written instructions.
  • Excellent decision making skills in a high stress environment.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

The successful candidates must be able to attend and successfully complete (with a minimum of 80%) a 5-week Ministry of Health training. Upon successful completion of the 5 week training course, an additional 200-400 hours of full time on the job training will commence. A job offer is conditional upon a satisfactory criminal record check. Minimum requirements will be tested.
