As a member of the military, Aircraft Structures Technicians are part of the air maintenance team responsible for handling, servicing, and maintaining Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aircraft and related equipment. They focus on the maintenance and repair of aviation life support equipment, aircraft structures, and components.
Aircraft Structures Technicians are skilled in metal and composite repair, refinishing, painting, machining, and welding. They play a vital role in aircraft maintenance, including servicing, supply, tool control, and safety. Their primary responsibilities include:
Technicians provide structural maintenance during Navy, Army, and Air Force operations. Inspections and repairs are performed on aircraft, mostly in hangars or shops. They are stationed at CAF bases across Canada, including the Arctic, with potential deployment worldwide for NATO and UN missions.
In the Regular Force, after training, members are assigned to a base and may relocate. In the Primary Reserve, members serve part-time at local units, with opportunities for full-time employment or deployment.
The minimum education requirement is provincial Grade 10 or Quebec Secondary 4, including Math. Candidates with a college diploma may be directly placed into on-the-job training post-basic training. Foreign education may be accepted.
The CAF also offers the Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP), where successful recruits attend college, receive full salary, and work with the CAF.
The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. It is physically demanding and covers core military skills. Technical training occurs at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering in Borden, Ontario, lasting approximately 26 weeks, covering topics from metallurgy to aircraft servicing and welding.
Advanced training and specialization courses are available, including Quality Assurance, Non-Destructive Testing, CNC Machining, and more. Opportunities for career advancement through leadership and management courses are also provided.
This role is available part-time in the Primary Reserve, serving at local units across Canada. Reserve members typically serve up to 12 days per month, with full-time opportunities for short periods, earning 92.8% of regular pay, benefits, and pension eligibility.
