Job summary

Inland Deicing Services in Ottawa, Ontario, is hiring for a seasonal full-time Aircraft De-icer to join a safety‑driven team operating de-icing trucks on the airfield during winter weather. You will ensure the well-being of staff and stakeholders while complying with regulations and company policies.

The role requires alertness, teamwork and the ability to work in variable weather conditions, with daily paperwork and coordination with pilots and ground crews.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age and able to pass an extended background check.
  • Past experience in a 24/7 operational environment is an asset.
  • Basic computer skills with ability to learn internal programs.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively; follow safety rules and manuals.
  • Comfort operating large vehicles in inclement weather; work at heights.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and adhere to safety and respectful workplace culture; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Operate de-icing trucks safely near airfield personnel and equipment.
  • Begin de-icing only when safe and aircraft have right of way; coordinate with pilots and operators.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and on time; maintain logs.
  • Communicate clearly with aircraft operators, spray operators and GRV operators via radio.
  • Shutdown procedures for pads; log maintenance issues and follow procedures.
  • Comply with Labour, Health and Safety laws and company policies.
  • Follow Inland’s handbooks, plans, and directives to meet specifications.
  • Test aircraft de-icing fluids as required; perform daily vehicle inspections.
  • Foster goodwill with IDS customers and support Inland’s service standards.
  • Promote a team environment and group culture.

Position Overview

Aircraft De-icers work as part of a team to safely and efficiently operate aircraft de-icing trucks for the purpose of de-icing aircraft during inclement weather while ensuring the well-being of self and all internal and external stakeholders. Please note that this is a seasonal full-time job. We have scheduled seasonal lay-off and recall that occur every year. Responsibilities/Duties
  • Promote and adhere to our safety and respectful workplace culture and instilling this culture while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance with all employee-focused regulations and state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Operate equipment within close proximity to airfield personnel, aircraft and other airfield equipment safely and efficiently;
  • Be alert and aware of other apron traffic, and to only begin de-icing when it can be done safely without interfering with aircraft movement. AIRCRAFT ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY;
  • Promptly and accurately complete all associated paperwork as required;
  • Professionally communicate with aircraft operators (pilots), spraying operators, GRV operators, and other stakeholders in a clear and concise manner via two-way radio;
  • Ensure proper shutdown of pads, including paperwork and logbooks; that all maintenance issues have been logged and reported to maintenance and all proper shutdown procedures for the equipment are followed;
  • Comply with all Government Labour, Health and Safety laws, regulations and policies;
  • Abide by Inland’s procedural handbooks, operational plans, and directives of management to ensure that all work is done according to specifications and/or regulations;
  • Testing of aircraft de-icing fluids as required;
  • Perform daily Vehicle walk-around inspections utilizing appropriate checklists;
  • Promote the best interest of the company by fostering goodwill and support between IDS and its customers ensuring that Inland’s policy of superior service and satisfaction are met;
  • Foster a team environment and create a “group culture”;
Required skills & experience
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Minimum 18 years of age;
  • Ability to pass an extended background check;
  • Past experience in a 24/7 operational environment would be an asset;
  • Flexible availability;
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft programs and the ability to learn how to use internal computer programs;
  • Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively;
  • Ability to interpret documents including safety rules, operating and procedure manuals;
  • Basic knowledge of aircraft and how they perform would be an asset;
  • Basic mechanical competence and ability to effectively use hand tools would be an asset;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to maintain a positive and good-natured attitude;
  • Must be comfortable working at various heights;
  • Must be comfortable operating large vehicles during inclement weather in constricted areas;
  • Ability to remain calm and perform under pressure and within fixed time constraints.
Physical Demands

It is expected that the candidate be physically fit and able to perform all operational requirements; Ability to lift, push, and pull objects up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally and twenty (20) pounds regularly; Employees must have the ability to climb 15-foot heights for work; Position involves standing or sitting for extended periods of time as well as bending, kneeling, lifting, climbing, using hands to control tools and feel objects, reaching with hands and arms; Work outdoors for long periods when necessary; Ability to work in a confined space for extended periods of time; Wearing of personal protective equipment when required and full mobility allowing for freedom of movement in high-risk environment; Must be able to speak clearly and hear efficiently; Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; May be required to move, connect, disconnect hoses and be able to operate industrial valves and perform general labor duties.

Security Clearance

Ability to obtain and maintain all security clearances required by Transport Canada or TSA and/or local Airport Authorities; Ability to pass pre-employment background screenings.
