Job summary

Trench Canada is offering an internship to work on robotics and AI/ML projects in the energy sector. You will contribute to developing robot software, perception, localization, and autonomous navigation, collaborating with senior leadership on impactful tasks.

The role focuses on building scalable AI solutions, testing in simulation and on real hardware, and documenting results for the team. Expected commitment is 4 to 8 months, with an hourly pay range and hands-on mentorship.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of robotics fundamentals and computer vision.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++ and Python.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and reusable code following sound software engineering practices, suitable for use beyond one-off prototypes.
  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch) and computer vision / multimodal models, including object detection, segmentation, and vision-language models.
  • Experience with ROS 2.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and test robot software components (e.g. ROS 2 nodes) for perception, navigation, and data logging.
  • Support mapping, localization (SLAM), and autonomous navigation testing.
  • Build and improve computer vision models for object detection and scene understanding, including data collection, annotation, training, and evaluation.
  • Support deployment and optimization of models for real-time inference on edge hardware.
  • Run experiments in simulation and validate results on the physical robot.
  • Document methods, configurations, and results clearly for the team.

Your Tasks


  • Develop and test robot software components (e.g. ROS 2 nodes) for perception, navigation, and data logging.

  • Support mapping, localization (SLAM), and autonomous navigation testing.

  • Build and improve computer vision models for object detection and scene understanding, including data collection, annotation, training, and evaluation.

  • Support deployment and optimization of models for real-time inference on edge hardware.

  • Run experiments in simulation and validate results on the physical robot.

  • Document methods, configurations, and results clearly for the team.


Problems you can help solve


  • Detecting obstructions and trip hazards along patrol routes.

  • Verifying PPE and operator safety compliance in the test lab.

  • Confirming electrical panel clearance compliance.

  • Reading and verifying inspection tags and asset status.

  • Monitoring test lab operational status (energized vs. safe) with near-100% reliability.


Requirements


  • Currently pursuing a degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • Working knowledge of robotics fundamentals and computer vision.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++ and Python.

  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and reusable code following sound software engineering practices, suitable for use beyond one-off prototypes.

  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch) and computer vision / multimodal models, including object detection, segmentation, and vision-language models.

  • Knowledge of vision-language-action (VLA) models is a plus.

  • Experience working in Linux and with version control (Git).

  • Experience with ROS 2.

  • Familiarity with edge AI hardware (e.g. NVIDIA Jetson) and inference optimization (TensorRT, quantization).

  • Familiarity with SLAM, navigation stacks (e.g. Nav2), or sensor fusion with LiDAR and depth cameras.

  • Experience with robotics simulation (Gazebo, Isaac Sim).

  • Ability to work independently and communicate technical results clearly.

  • Applicants must submit their GitHub profiles alongside resumes.

  • Comfort operating in a high-voltage industrial test lab under supervised safety protocols.
