Job summary

Trench Canada is seeking an AI & ML Intern for Applied Sciences in Scarborough/Pickering, ON (4–8 months). You will join a special taskforce (Project NOVA) across Mechanical, Electrical, and Industrial/Process tracks, guiding model selection and aligning AI solutions with engineering needs.

The role emphasizes practical experience in AI/ML applications to energy transmission, with opportunities to present findings, work with senior leadership, and contribute to cutting-edge solutions.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or recently completed degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial/Process, or Mechatronics.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Java with solid coding experience.
  • Experience with AI/ML libraries: TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn.
  • Experience with data visualization: Tableau or Power BI.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Applicants must submit GitHub profiles with resumes.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify AI/ML opportunities and data needs.

This postingcovers three engineering tracks within Project NOVA — Mechanical, Electrical,and Industrial/Process — each helping bridge the gap between engineering and AIinnovation. As an AI & ML Intern, you'll apply your technical expertise toguide model selection and ensure AI solutions meet real-world engineeringneeds. Candidates should indicate their preferred track(s) when applying.

Your Tasks:

Across alltracks, interns will:

  • Collaboratewith cross-functional teams to identify AI/ML opportunities and gather datarequirements.
  • Design,build, and deploy AI/ML models.
  • Analyzelarge datasets to extract insights, trends, anomalies, and opportunities forimprovement.
  • Supportdata preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
  • Documentdevelopment processes, methodologies, and results for project reports.
  • Presentfindings to stakeholders using visualizations and reports.
  • Staycurrent with AI/ML advancements and bridge engineering and AI requirements.
Areas of Focus
Mechanical Engineering
  • Foundationalunderstanding of finite element analysis — structural dynamics, modal analysis,eigenvalue problems, and mode shapes.
  • Proficientin Python with hands-on experience using NumPy and SciPy for numerical dataprocessing.
  • Experiencewith 3D visualization libraries — PyVista, Matplotlib, or Plotly.
  • OpenFOAMor fluid-structure interaction experience is a bonus but not required.
Electrical Engineering
  • ApplyAI/ML techniques using Azure Machine Learning.
  • Knowledgeof Azure cloud platforms.
  • Experiencewith vector databases (e.g., Pinecone).
Industrial / Process Engineering
  • Analyzeproduction and operational processes to identify inefficiencies andbottlenecks.
  • Assistin designing AI/ML algorithms to optimize industrial processes and improveoperational efficiency.
  • Abilityto translate customer needs into technical specifications.
Requirements:
  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial/Process Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Java; solid coding experience required.
  • Experience with AI/ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to translate real-world engineering needs into technical specifications.
