Job summary

Securian Canada is seeking an Actuary to lead experience studies and drive strategic projects within the Valuation team in Waterloo, ON. You will transform historical data into robust assumptions for valuation, capital management and financial reporting.

The role requires ACIA/FCIA progression, strong AXIS modeling skills, and experience with Life, Critical Illness and Disability products. You will mentor colleagues and influence senior stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• ACIA or equivalent designation with progression toward FCIA.
• 4+ years actuarial experience in insurance including valuation, financial reporting, modeling or analysis.
• Strong AXIS modeling expertise and complex modeling problem solving.
• Experience leading or mentoring actuarial professionals.
• Experience with Life, Critical Illness and Disability insurance products.
• Proven experience leading end-to-end actuarial experience studies including data analysis, assumption development and recommendations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making with ability to translate findings to business insights.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management including influencing both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proficiency with Excel, R and databases.
• Self-motivated and driven to improve processes and challenge the status quo.

As the Actuary, Experience Studies and Special Projects, you will play a key role within our Valuation team, combining actuarial expertise, strategic thinking, and innovation to drive meaningful business impact. We are looking for a curious, analytical, and forward-thinking professional who thrives on transforming complex data into actionable insights and influencing important business decisions.

In this role, you will lead actuarial experience studies, analyzing historical experience, industry trends, and financial results to develop well-supported assumptions that contribute to valuation, capital management, and financial reporting. Leveraging a deep understanding of product design and policyholder characteristics, you will develop robust analyses and meaningful insights, communicating recommendations and findings to the Appointed Actuary and Chief Actuary.

You will also lead strategic projects spanning modeling accuracy, operational efficiency, and business analysis, helping evolve how our actuarial function supports the broader organization. The base salary range for this position is between $85,000 to $115,000 depending on experience. Details of our additional benefits are outlined below. This job posting is for an existing vacancy. Only one position is available. However, it may be based in multiple locations: Toronto (ON), or Waterloo (ON), Montreal (QC), or Burnaby (BC).

What you will do

• Lead experience study production with high degree of technical acuity and generation of business insights.

What you will bring

• Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (ACIA) or equivalent actuarial designation, with progression toward Fellowship (FCIA).
• 4+ years of actuarial experience within the insurance industry, including experience in valuation, financial reporting, modeling, or financial analysis.
• Strong GGY AXIS modeling expertise and experience solving complex modeling challenges.
• Experience leading or mentoring actuarial professionals.
• Experience with Life, Critical Illness, and Disability insurance products.
• Proven experience leading end-to-end actuarial experience studies, including data analysis, assumption development, and recommendations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to translate technical findings into business insights.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proficiency with actuarial and analytical tools such as Excel, R, and databases.
• Self-motivated, accountable, and driven to continuously improve processes and challenge the status quo.

• FCIA (or equivalent) designation.
• Knowledge of IFRS 17 and LICAT capital requirements (US GAAP is an asset).
• Experience leading change initiatives and building support across cross-functional teams.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines.
