Job summary

Echelon Insurance is seeking an actuarial student to work closely with actuarial teams across Pricing, Corporate, and Business Intelligence/Analytics. The role offers exposure to data extraction, reserve reviews, and financial reporting in a fast-paced environment in Canada.

You will work with data professionals using Excel, VBA, Python, SQL and SAS; bilingual English/French is required for cross-country collaboration.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a post-secondary program focused on Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related field.
• Familiarity with Excel, VBA, Python, SAS, SQL or other programming languages is an asset.
• Must be adaptable, proactive and autonomous.
• English (advanced) and French required for regular cross-country communication.

Responsibilities

• Run data extraction applications and analyze results to support pricing, corporate, or BI/Analytics.
• Contribute to monthly reserve reviews and analyze claims diagnostics.
• Prepare liability estimations for review with senior management.
• Assist in month-end financial reporting and capital management initiatives.
• Contribute to IFRS 17 and other special projects.

Position Details

Reporting to an Actuarial Manager, the Actuarial student will work closely with other Actuarial Associates, Senior Management and other stakeholders in our Mississauga and Montreal offices. This position will provide the candidate with exposure to one of the following disciplines: Pricing, Corporate or Business Intelligence/Analytics.

Work term responsibilities will vary depending on the department you will be working for:

Corporate

• Run applications for data extraction and analyze the results
• Contribute to monthly reserve reviews and analyze claims diagnostics
• Prepare an estimation of the liabilities to be reviewed with senior management
• Assist in month-end financial reporting
• Support Financial Condition Testing (FCT), Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) and other capital management initiatives
• Contribute to special projects such as IFRS 17

Pricing

• Understand data, maintain and develop programs for data extraction and analyze the results
• Assist with monitoring our portfolios for profitability and growth, and communicating insights
• Assist with developing actuarial indications and underlying assumptions
• Support other departments, such as underwriting
• Contribute to special projects such as rate filings, rate/product reviews, and competitive analysis

Business Intelligence/Analytics

• Build and maintain profitability/growth/segmentation models to predict customer cost and behavior
• Update/improve/maintain data relied upon by the Actuarial Department
• Help in the development of tools and intelligent reports to other teams, allowing for better decision-making throughout the company
• Conduct ad-hoc analyses to support business units' needs, and regulatory requirements

• Enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution with a focus on Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or any other related program.
• Familiarity with Excel, VBA, Python, SAS, SQL, or other programming languages an asset
• Must be adaptable, proactive and autonomous
• An advanced level of English is required in addition to French, as this role involves regular communication, both verbal and written, with our clients, partners, and other Echelon Insurance teams across the country.
