Job summary

Echelon Insurance in Mississauga invites applications for an Actuarial Student role. You will work with our actuarial Associates across Pricing, Corporate, and Business Intelligence/Analytics, gaining exposure to data extraction, liability estimation, and financial reporting.

You will leverage Excel, VBA, Python, SAS, and SQL while collaborating with senior teams to support IFRS 17 initiatives and rate analysis. Strong English skills required; French helps in Montréal teams.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program focused on Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related field.
  • Familiarity with Excel, VBA, Python, SAS, SQL or similar languages is an asset.
  • Must be adaptable, proactive and autonomous.
  • English proficiency required; French is beneficial if Montréal location.

Responsibilities

  • Corporate: Run data extraction, analyze results, support monthly reserve reviews and claims diagnostics.
  • Provide liability estimates for review with senior management and assist month-end reporting.
  • Support capital management activities and IFRS 17 initiatives as needed.
  • Pricing: Analyze data, monitor profitability and growth, and communicate insights to stakeholders.
  • Develop actuarial indications and underlying assumptions; assist underwriting and rate processes.
  • BI/Analytics: Build models for profitability/growth/segmentation, update data, and create reports for decision-making.
  • Conduct ad-hoc analyses to support business units and regulatory needs.

Position Details

Reporting to an Actuarial Manager, the Actuarial student will work closely with other Actuarial Associates, Senior Management and other stakeholders in our Mississauga and Montreal offices. This position will provide the candidate with exposure to one of the following disciplines: Pricing, Corporate or Business Intelligence/Analytics.


Work term responsibilities will vary depending on the department you will be working for:


Corporate


  • Run applications for data extraction and analyze the results

  • Contribute to monthly reserve reviews and analyze claims diagnostics

  • Prepare an estimation of the liabilities to be reviewed with senior management

  • Assist in month-end financial reporting

  • Support Financial Condition Testing (FCT), Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) and other capital management initiatives

  • Contribute to special projects such as IFRS 17


Pricing


  • Understand data, maintain and develop programs for data extraction and analyze the results

  • Assist with monitoring our portfolios for profitability and growth, and communicating insights

  • Assist with developing actuarial indications and underlying assumptions

  • Support other departments, such as underwriting

  • Contribute to special projects such as rate filings, rate/product reviews, and competitive analysis


Business Intelligence/Analytics


  • Build and maintain profitability/growth/segmentation models to predict customer cost and behavior

  • Update/improve/maintain data relied upon by the Actuarial Department

  • Help in the development of tools and intelligent reports to other teams, allowing for better decision-making throughout the company

  • Conduct ad-hoc analyses to support business units' needs, and regulatory requirements

  • Strong communication skills:verbal and written

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution with a focus on Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or any other related program.

  • Familiarity with Excel, VBA, Python, SAS, SQL, or other programming languages an asset

  • Must be adaptable, proactive and autonomous

  • An advanced level of English is required in addition to French, if located in Montréal, as this role involves regular communication, both verbal and written, with our clients, partners, and other Echelon Insurance teams across the country.
