Role Title: Actuarial Analyst or Senior Actuarial Analyst, Corporate Actuarial

Purpose of role: An exciting development opportunity exists within Corporate Actuarial for a successful and motivated individual on their path to Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA).

The Actuarial Student will work closely with actuarial staff in a dynamic environment. As part of the Corporate Actuarial team, you will develop and utilize advanced analytics tools to drive insights into experience, support the Canadian IFRS valuation processes, and contribute to other projects supporting the Appointed Actuary function. The role involves developing process improvements and partnering with the team to enhance capabilities. The incumbent will gain exposure across various actuarial disciplines for business in Canada and the U.S.

The incumbent would be enrolled in our Actuarial Student Program, which provides exam support and work experience essential for attaining fellowship.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  1. Conduct experience studies (e.g., mortality, lapse, expense) and lead analysis for setting assumptions and maintaining the assumption database.
  2. Support quarterly IFRS17 reporting activities, including data loading, assumption changes, reporting projects, MD&A analysis, and regulatory filings.
  3. Construct and maintain an actuarial risk dashboard for all product lines through data analysis and understanding of risk profiles.
  4. Communicate experience study results to team members and actuarial professionals.
  5. Perform dividend and non-guaranteed element analyses to support scale changes.
  6. Stay updated on industry experience studies and best practices in assumption setting.
  7. Collaborate with Product Actuarial team to develop experience assumptions for pricing.
  8. Support model and process improvements to enhance reporting and analysis value.
  9. Maintain actuarial process documentation in line with standards and legislation.
  10. Monitor regulatory developments (e.g., LICAT, IFRS 17) and assess implications, developing relationships with stakeholders across departments.

Key Qualifications/Competencies:

  • Experience with analytic systems, including databases (SQL), Microsoft Office (Excel, Access), and modeling systems (e.g., Moody’s AXIS).
  • Strong time management and multitasking skills.
  • Innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Currently pursuing SOA exams with goal of FSA & FCIA designations.
  • Knowledge of financial services industry and products: life insurance, annuities, segregated funds, mutual funds in Canada and the U.S.
  • Understanding of Canadian and U.S. valuation and solvency regimes.
  • Familiarity with professional standards and regulations issued by relevant actuarial bodies.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills across disciplines and levels.
  • Self-motivated with strong research skills.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
