We are seeking two collaborative and equity-focused Active Transportation Events Assistants to support the delivery of outreach, education and engagement programs.

As part of the Active Transportation team, you will help develop various marketing and education campaigns focused at getting more residents interested in active transportation. You will help plan and deliver active transportation events and attend events across the city to interact with residents and encourage them to start walking and cycling.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Manager, Active Transportation, with functional guidance from the Active Transportation Coordinator, the successful candidate will perform the following:

  • Assist with the creation of new outreach program materials.
  • Represent the City of Mississauga at events throughout Mississauga to engage residents in a conversation about cycling and provide them with available city resources and motivate them to start cycling.
  • Collect data, survey responses and feedback from events and prepare event report summaries.
  • Track and maintain an inventory of display and promotional materials.
  • Assist with promotion and execution of various aspects of Active Transportation projects
  • Assist in the development of public engagement plans and strategies for major projects;
  • Provide both written and verbal feedback to staff and the general public related to active transportation design and operations; and
  • Perform other duties as required, including supporting the Coordinator in infrastructure-related tasks (signage, pavement markings, site visits, data collection, etc).

Additional Information:

The successful applicants will be assigned to one of two focus areas: Active School Travel Programs working with the Active Transportation Coordinator, or Active Transportation Events & Outreach working with the Transportation Demand Management Coordinator. Work plans will heavily emphasize the focus area, but will still provide opportunities to work collaboratively on projects and programs across the team.

Focus Area One - Assist in planning and execution of local cycling events including community rides, bike fests, special event valet bike parking, and others

  • One position will be primarily focused on these tasks.

Focus Area Two - Assist in planning and execution of active school travel programming including the City’s School Streets project

  • One position will be primarily focused on these tasks

Please note:Starting in September, you will be responsible for helping to run a School Street in Malton atCorliss Public School (Ward 5) for two shifts a day, every school day, one from approximately 8-9am, and one from approximately 2:30-3:30pm. Work location between school shifts is flexible and remote work is available.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Graduate of a post-graduate degree or diploma program; consideration will be given for a Bachelor’s degree program or Ontario College diploma program in planning, environmental science / studies, civil engineering, business or a related discipline;
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates that have previous, related experience in outreach and education as well as interest and/or experience in organizing events, communications, public relations, and marketing and sales.
  • Demonstrated passion for walking and cycling as a recreational or transportation activity is an asset;
  • Experience with computer applications such as Adobe Suite, MS Office, Outlook, graphic design, webpage design, and other related software;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill are essential;
  • Interest in public engagement would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work is crucial;
  • Must be comfortable traveling to multiple locations, and able to provide own transportation (use of personal vehicle will be compensated at an established per km rate).

Hourly Rate/Salary:$19.80 - $23.53
Hours of Work:35 hours per week
