Job summary

Capital Power is seeking an Accounting Specialist - Trading Finance to support accounting results and cash flow for our growing energy trading business, including power, natural gas, and renewables. You will work across multiple teams and customers to ensure accuracy in transactional accounting and reporting.

The role requires a solid foundation in accounting with 3–5 years of experience, familiarity with ETRM/ERP systems, and a proactive approach to process improvements.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in accounting, business or related field.
• Progression toward a CPA or CFA designation is an asset.
• 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in energy trading/finance or risk management.

Responsibilities

• Support month-end GL close processes and reporting, including reconciliations and settlements for trading transactions.
• Apply accounting skills to support trading activities across North America’s power, gas, and renewables sectors.
• Coordinate data with 3rd parties, ISOs, and internal partners (Finance, Supply & Trading, Legal, Risk).
• Develop proficiency with energy trading systems (ETRM) and related software.
• Support new business initiatives and continuous process improvements for controls and efficiency.
• Maintain documentation and adhere to CSOX and internal controls.

We're growing and are currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Supply and Trading Accounting team!

We are seeking a highly motivated Accounting Specialist to join our dynamic team at Capital Power. As an Accounting Specialist - Trading Finance, you will play a vital role in supporting our growing energy trading business by ensuring accounting results and cash flow at the transactional level accurately represent the trading activity through a combination of accounting and analytical skills, business understanding, leveraging technology, and collaboration with multiple teams and customers. The scope of the role covers power, natural gas, and/or environmental trading activities including new business initiatives and ongoing continuous process improvements. You will contribute to our team by

• Supporting month‑end general ledger close processes and reporting through analysis of results, account reconciliations, daily reconciliation and check‑out process for trading transactions, preparation of entries including accruals, and settlement activities including timely counterparty invoicing, collection and payment activities.
• Applying continuously expanding industry and accounting skills and knowledge to support the growing trading activities across North America’s power, natural gas, and renewables sectors.
• Coordinating and aligning transaction details and other data between 3rd party counterparties and ISOs, and internal business partners including but not limited to Finance, Supply and Trading, Information Services, Legal, and Risk Management groups.
• Becoming proficient working with the energy trading and risk management system (ETRM), EPM system and various other applications to execute daily and monthly activities.
• Supporting new business and systems initiatives including identification, recommendations, planning, and execution of continuous process improvement projects positively impacting the effectiveness of controls, and efficiency and effectiveness of processes.
• Establishing and maintaining a strong working rapport with both internal and external parties, including accurately responding to inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
• Assisting with deliverables associated with quarter‑end interim reviews and year‑end audits.
• Maintaining updated documentation and checklists around the accounting processes, ensuring adherence to CSOX and other internal controls.
• Adhering to HSE procedures/rules and standards.

What you will bring to the role

Education

• Degree/diploma in accounting, business or related field.
• Progression toward a CPA or CFA designation is an asset.

Experience

• 3 -5 years of demonstrated accounting experience with preference given to those with energy trading finance or risk management, or equivalent experience.
• Previous experience with trade accounting applications such as Allegro or TriplePoint ETRM systems, and EPM applications such as Oracle or SAP is considered an asset.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency with MS Office suite of applications, Excel in particular.
• High attention to detail, analytical and strong problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), including the ability to work effectively with others and cultivate strong relationships across functional teams.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated project and/or change management skills to keep pace with our growing business.
