Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting team across corporate entities and real estate projects in the Halton region. You will oversee month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and covenant calculations while coordinating intercompany activities and draws.

Ideal candidates will have CPA designation, 7+ years of progressive accounting experience including team leadership, and strong ERP/AI workflow implementation knowledge in a real estate development

Job description

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the accounting team across corporate entities, projects, accounts payable, and payroll
• Run month-end and year-end close for all corporate and project entities
• Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, financial statements, reporting packages, and covenant calculations
• Account for joint arrangements, investments in related entities, intercompany billings, and settlements
• Own balance sheet reconciliations, weekly bank reconciliations, debt reconciliations, and debt schedules
• Oversee corporate accounting, project job costs, capitalization, statutory holdbacks, occupancy, final closings, revenue, and cost of sales recognition
• Own accounts payable and monthly construction draw cycles, including lender and partner funding coordination
• Review receivables, purchaser deposits, occupancy fee billing, closing adjustments, HST rebates, partner billings, and rental receivables
• Lead external audit fieldwork and resolve control deficiencies
• Own tax, HST, payroll, regulatory, lender, and covenant compliance filings
• Prepare budget, forecast, cash flow, and variance-analysis inputs for the Controller
• Drive lean accounting, AI workflow automation, ERP implementation, Power Query, Power BI, and process documentation
• Report to the Controller and work directly with principals on finance-function and ERP development

Requirements

• Completed CPA designation; in-progress candidates are not considered
• Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two years leading and developing a team
• Experience leading a team of accountants while personally preparing statements, reporting packages, and covenant calculations
• Experience building and scaling a finance and accounting function
• Full-cycle close and complete financial statement ownership from end to end
• Real estate development or construction accounting experience, including multi-entity structures, job cost accounting, capitalization of development costs, holdbacks, construction draws, construction loan accounting, and Construction Act prompt-payment compliance
• Public accounting training preferred, ideally audit or assurance at a Big Four or national firm
• Multi-entity and intercompany accounting experience; consolidation, joint venture, or partnership accounting is an asset
• Working knowledge of corporate tax and HST for a development business
• Payroll ownership, including source deductions, remittances, and year-end filings
• Accounts payable and monthly construction draw management, including holdbacks, statutory declarations, and lien compliance
• Advanced Excel and financial modelling, including Power Query
• Lean thinking applied to accounting, with demonstrated process improvement and cycle-time measurement
• Proven experience applying AI to daily accounting workflows
• Experience with Sage 300 CRE, Sage Intacct, Yardi, TimberScan, or comparable construction or real estate ERP preferred
• ERP implementation experience is a significant asset
• Judgment to hold technical accounting positions under pressure and explain them plainly to non-financial audiences

Demonstrates expertise in leading accounting teams, managing full-cycle financial processes, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Proficient in advanced financial modeling, ERP implementation, and applying AI to enhance accounting workflows.
