SPI Plastics Inc. (A PlayCore Company) is seeking an Accounting Generalist to join our team. The ideal candidate will need prior experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) accounting, creating and posting journal entries, and reconciliations.

This individual will also contribute to managing and overseeing accounting operations including AR, AP, invoicing, the monthly close cycle, financial reporting, payroll (backup). We are eager to find an Accounting Generalist who will promote teamwork, create a positive and safe work environment while having a drive for success, ownership of responsibilities, and a passion for being the best.

Full‑time position. Standard work week from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, with the understanding that workload may require some week‑to‑week flexibility based on business needs.

Position is eligible for insurance benefits (medical, dental, life, and LTD) from your first day of employment. Position eligible to participate in the employer/employee RRSP savings program. Position eligible for the monthly SPI Operational Bonus Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain general ledger by creating, verifying, and posting journal entries, as well as reconciling balance sheet accounts.
  • Working knowledge of accrual accounting and regulatory standards (GAAP).
  • Process weekly payments and cheque requests.
  • Participate and support the monthly close cycle and financial reporting.
  • Require professional and prudent communications both internally and externally while working in a team environment with a diverse group of people.
  • Backup of the weekly payroll for SPI.
    • Verification of payroll earnings and deductions including RRSP contributions, benefits and payroll deductions and terminations in the system.
    • Posting of the journal entries required to post payroll to the general ledger.
  • Reconciliation of external accounts, including bank accounts and credit card accounts.
  • Ability to write short correspondence and effectively communicate with internal and external customers and vendors.
  • Coordination of intercompany charges with sister companies and reconciliation of those intercompany charges requiring a high degree of ongoing communication.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of data to see patterns and discrepancies and to communicate the analysis results in a concise manner.
  • Preparation of financial analyses and reports.
  • Provide the calculation and coordination of commission payments.
  • Have the skills for all other accounting positions including invoicing, order entry, A/R, A/P, and credit and collections.
  • Must actively work to improve accounting processes.
  • Protection of organization’s value by keeping information confidential.
  • Other duties or support of staff as may be assigned by manager or supervisor.

Education and/or Experience
  • 3 to 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates a commanding knowledge of accounting or finance.
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or other business‑centric degree with a focus in accounting.
  • Familiarity with Payworks or UKG payroll administration is a plus.
  • Work experience in a manufacturing environment would be an asset.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position works in a standard office environment containing furniture and equipment needed to conduct common business activities. These items include desks, chairs, cubicle walls, phone systems and cords, fax machines, copiers, conference room tables, computer systems and file cabinets.

Computer Skills

Must be proficient in all Microsoft Suite products including Outlook, Teams, and Word with a high degree of proficiency in Excel. Experience with Sage or Spire is an asset.
