Annual Salary Range: $77,021 - $91,592 depending on qualifications

Purpose of Position
Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, the Accountant is responsible for providing financial support and guidance within the Division, performing a variety of accounting, analysis, and financial audit and reporting related duties.
The Accountant plays a critical support role within the Secretary Treasurer’s department with intermediate knowledge and experience in full cycle accounting and internal audit. The Accountant is also integral to the support, oversight and direction of School Fund Management and Accounting.
Key Responsibilities
Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
- Responsible for general accounting duties, and supporting month-end and year-end processes and reporting.
- Responsible for full cycle accounting activities, including preparation and maintenance of balance sheet reconciliations and journal entries for period close.
- Responsible for full cycle accounting for Pembina Trails Educational Support Fund (charitable organization) including statement preparation.
- Provides accounting and administrative support and guidance for the International Student Program.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of internal reports including departmental chargebacks and monitoring and reconciling revenue from various departments and external sources.
- Provides support for EIS collection and related reporting, as applicable.
- Prepares invoices and reconciles and monitors Accounts Receivable.
- Prepares monthly bank reconciliations and assists the Accounting Manager with monitoring cash flow and cash projections.
- Prepares and monitors grant and project accounting.
- Responsible for oversight, and reconciliation of Divisional Credit Card and Purchasing Card program.
- Performs internal audit procedures and provides support and recommendations consistent with Division policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Strengthens internal control environment through review, design and application of policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Provides orientation, training, and support to staff and departments on finance related activities.
- Provides oversight and guidance to schools for School Funds Management, and accounting.
- Supports prudent financial decision making through financial inquiry and analysis.
- Provides commodity tax administration for Division and schools.
- Provides backup as required for the Purchasing Agent & Accounting Manager, including reviewing and authorizing purchase orders, and offering general departmental support and training when necessary.
- Performs other duties and ad hoc reporting as assigned to support the efficient operation of the Department.
Skills And Qualifications
Skill and Knowledge – Required:
- Post-secondary education in accounting (Degree or Diploma of completion.)
- 3+ years of relevant accounting experience desired.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, accounting software and database management.
- Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures.
- Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end process.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent customer service skills with the proven ability to defuse conflict and deal with complaints and concerns effectively and professionally.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Skill And Knowledge – Desired
- Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS)
- Previous experience in a public sector environment
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (either enrollment or completion thereof)
