Job summary

The Alex Community Health Centre in Calgary is seeking a part-time Accountant to support monthly general ledger reconciliations, annual and semi-annual returns, payroll reporting, and general accounting tasks. This permanent, 0.6 FTE role offers a stable on-site work environment with standard hours.

Qualifications

  • Accounting certificate required, or actively working toward a CPA designation; equivalent education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in an accounting role, preferably within a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or other accounting software, as well as strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare payroll, ADP, and group insurance reconciliations, as well as spreadsheets and journal entries.
  • Perform bank and general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Prepare GST and WCB returns.
  • Maintain monthly working papers and prepare and enter journal entries.
  • Assist with the preparation of external audits.
  • Maintain capital asset schedules.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

What We Do

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, The Accountant is responsible for preparing monthly general ledger reconciliations and annual and semi-annual returns. The role also supports payroll reporting and provides general accounting support to the Finance team.

What You Will Do

Work Environment and Hours:
  • The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840 – 2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB
  • 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours of work/wk)
  • Standard hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday; part-time hours are based on 3 days per week, with flexibility regarding which days are worked.
  • Sedentary role involving extended computer use and sitting.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 10–15 lbs).
  • Frequent repetitive hand and wrist movements.
