Independent contributor recognized as a Risk Control expert aligned with the Engineered Property line of business. A team player contributing to the success of the Engineered Property’s three segment verticals, Energy, Real Estate & Complex Property, through the delivery of risk control services. Works independently and within a team environment requiring specialist technical complexity and coordination.

Provides risk control expertise for high hazard complex risks by assessing risk and conveying the exposures and loss estimates to the underwriting team. Operates as the Risk Control single point of contact for Engineered Property on assigned accounts.

Job Description
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Works with the Engineered Property team to evaluate and assess high hazard complex risks, applying Risk Control policies, guidelines, insurance laws, and regulations, and resolving critical risk control matters.
  • Provides risk control perspective across an entire account portfolio, utilizing corporate and location details to build a broad view of exposures and controls.
  • Performs physical risk surveys and produces comprehensive risk assessment reports with loss scenario estimates.
  • Produces desktop risk reports using internal/external data and evaluation tools, including loss scenario estimates.
  • Collaborates to develop portfolio and account strategies to improve loss ratios, achieve new business goals, and retain accounts.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external partners, enhancing CNA’s brand in the Canadian market.
  • Supports the team with technical expertise for ongoing learning and development.
  • Coordinates effectively with Claims for technical guidance and loss mitigation.
  • Works efficiently with underwriting teams in a fast-paced environment.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Senior-level technical and business management skills, with knowledge of insurance, risk principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Proven success managing large, high hazard, high-profile accounts.
  • Deep property risk assessment expertise, including fire protection and detection systems, codes, standards, fire science, and plan review.
  • Ability to assess natural hazards like earthquakes, storms, floods, and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of human element programs, building classifications, and loss expectancy methodologies.
  • Understanding hazards in various segments, including utilities, renewable energy, mining, industrial, and commercial sectors.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, decision-making, and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Resourceful in resolving complex business situations.
  • Proactive, with a long-term strategic view to achieve results.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other business software.
  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science preferred; Master’s or professional license (e.g., P.Eng, CFPS) is an asset.
  • 5-8 years of risk control experience.
