Mount Allison University is seeking an Access and Events Assistant for the Owens Art Gallery. The role supports visitor services, event setup, Play Atelier, and maintaining access resources, with one 4-hour weekday shift and additional hours up to 12 per week.

The term runs from 15 August to 15 May and includes evenings and weekends. You will greet visitors, assist with exhibitions, manage AV equipment, and help with the annual fundraiser.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Art History, Fine Arts, or Museum and Curatorial Studies or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing educational programs to children and working with the public.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and artistic practices.
  • Strong communications skills in English, with working French considered an asset.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment and confident responding to varying needs of gallery visitors.
  • Punctuality, reliability, attention to detail, and demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Previous experience working with audio-visual equipment is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Work one four-hour shift per week at the Owens’ Welcome Desk, greeting visitors, providing information on current exhibitions, answering and transferring phone calls, and monitoring gallery security.
  • Set up and take down tables, chairs and audio-visual equipment for events, including external bookings.
  • Work at the Welcome Desk during select after-hours events.
  • Be “on call” for Welcome Desk shifts during the week and on weekends.
  • Set up, host, and put away Play Atelier for Make Something Sunday, a monthly program of informal hands-on workshops for kids twelve and under and their adults.
  • Attend planning meetings and assist with material prep ahead of Make Something Sunday programs.
  • Disinfect and maintain access resources, such as fidgets and sensory kits.
  • Assist with Owens events and external bookings as needed.

Position descriptionThe Access and Events Assistant works closely with the full-time staff of the Owens Art Gallery and plays a vital role supporting access initiatives and public events at the Gallery. This position encompasses four, interrelated, public-focused areas of work: the Owens’ Visitor Services; event set-up and support; facilitating Play Atelier, a pop-up space for open-ended sensory and creative play linked to Make Something Sunday workshops; and maintaining access resources at the Gallery, such as Art Kits and sensory supports (e.g., ear defenders, fidgets, sensory kits, etc.). This is a part-time, casual position with one, regular, four-hour weekday shift per week, plus additional hours up to a maximum of twelve per week, primarily on evenings and weekends.
