Job summary

YMCA of Southwestern Ontario seeks a part-time 3-on-3 Youth Basketball Coach to support weekend practices and games at multiple Middlesex Centre and surrounding YMCA locations. You will deliver age-appropriate drills, foster inclusive participation, and reinforce fair play.

Training and certifications will be provided prior to start. A positive, professional approach is essential for youth development and community engagement.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth in sport, recreation, camp, or community setting.
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and ability to teach skills in an age-appropriate way.
  • Strong communication with participants, parents, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver age-appropriate practices and skill development aligned with YMCA values for youth aged 12–18.
  • Create an inclusive environment; adapt activities for diverse skill levels.
  • Model teamwork, respect, fair play, and effort.
  • Maintain participant safety and adhere to safeguarding policies.

Position: 3 on 3 Youth Basketball Coach

Locations: Middlesex Centre YMCA (Komoka), Stoney Creek YMCA, StarTech.com YMCA, Centre Branch YMCA

  • Specific locations and assignments will be discussed during the interview and hiring process

Program Details: Starting Saturday, Sept 26 or Sunday, Sept 26, depending on the site.

  • Part‑time, seasonal schedule; shifts typically occur on weekends based on practice and game times, but some evenings may apply
  • Approx. 2-4 hour shifts each week, depending on site needs

Training: Mandatory - Official training dates to be confirmed

  • Potential in-person training either Sat, September 12th or Sunday 13th (1 All Day training), Basketball Fundenmentalls Trainings
  • Positive Youth Development training Tues, September 15th and Wed 16th
  • After training, you will receive certifications in:
    • Basketball Coaching Association of Canada
    • Making Headway in Sport
    • Safe Sports
    • PYD (Positive Youth Development) Certification
  • Other YMCA online training to be completed before the program start date

In this role, you will:

  • Delivers age‑appropriate practices and skill development activities aligned with YMCA values and league standards to youth aged 12 to 18 years old.
  • Creates a welcoming, inclusive environment for participants of varied skill levels and backgrounds; adapts activities to meet diverse needs.
  • Models and reinforces positive sport behaviours including teamwork, respect, fair play, and effort.
  • Maintains participant safety through active supervision, safe equipment use, and adherence to YMCA safeguarding and health & safety requirements.
  • Implements behaviour management strategies consistent with YMCA standards; communicates concerns to the Coordinator as required.
  • Attends and supports weekly games as scheduled; ensures participants are prepared (warm‑up, rules reminders, sportsmanship expectations).
  • Communicates with parents/guardians in a professional, timely manner regarding schedules, expectations, and participant progress as appropriate.
  • Completes required documentation such as attendance, incident/accident reports, and equipment checklists.
  • Participates in required training, meetings, and coaching development sessions; follows direction from the Coordinator and Child & Youth leadership.
  • Officiates youth basketball games according to YMCA/league rules, emphasizing learning, fair play, and development.
  • Maintains control of the game environment by communicating calls clearly and managing the pace of play.

Education & Skills Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth in a sport, recreation, camp, or community setting (coaching experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and the ability to teach skills in an age‑appropriate way.
  • Current Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening (or willingness to obtain).
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage families and participants in a positive, professional manner.
