Job summary

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a Maintenance Worker Utilities (Sewer) to carry out manual, technical tasks for maintaining the City’s sanitary and storm sewer systems. You will inspect, operate, and repair sewer infrastructure and respond to service calls as required.

Based at the Maple Ridge Operations Centre, this role requires safety focus, the ability to read plans, and operation of heavy equipment.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 plus related experience or equivalent.
• Ability to read plans and perform basic maintenance tasks.
• Strong safety awareness and ability to work outdoors in all weather.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Maintenance Worker Utilities (Sewer) to perform a range of manual, operational, and technical work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of the City’s sanitary and storm sewer systems. The successful candidate will inspect, operate, maintain, clean, test, repair, and adjust sewer infrastructure, including sewer mains, services, pumps, chambers, and related equipment. This role responds to service calls related to utility services and connections and may also provide support for water distribution system work as operationally required.

Working as part of the Underground Operations team, the incumbent operates variety of related equipment specialized tools, including flusher truck and hydro-excavator truck; performs skilled pipelaying and pipefitting work; assists with or oversees excavation, repair, and restoration activities; and directs staff assigned to less complex utility maintenance tasks. The position requires the ability to interpret plans, charts, diagrams, and layouts; maintain basic work records; and ensure that all work is completed in accordance with applicable safety standards, operational procedures, and environmental requirements.

This position is based at the Maple Ridge Operations Centre, a front-line provider of essential public works services, including Roads and Fleet, Water Distribution, Sewage Disposal, Stormwater Management, Electrical and Mechanical Systems, and Procurement. The Operations Centre is committed to protecting public health and safety, safeguarding significant public infrastructure investments, protecting the environment, and maintaining reliable service levels for the community.

• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water or sewer systems maintenance and in pipelaying and pipefitting work as they related to the work performed and of the applicable safety standards and requirements.
• Considerable knowledge of the water and sanitary and storm sewer systems of the functions of the Underground Operations Branch related to the work performed.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and rules of safe and efficient operation of medium sized equipment.
• Ability to operate and perform routine servicing and repair of related equipment.
• Ability to comprehend and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision and to read and interpret plans, charts, diagrams and layouts.
• Ability to layout, assist in and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in manual maintenance tasks and to direct the work of equipment operators and truck drivers and to ensure adherence to the appropriate safety standards.
• Ability to maintain simple records relating to the work performed.
• Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools and equipment common to maintenance work.
• Sufficient physical strength and coordination to permit performance of heavy manual work outdoors in all weather

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

REQUIRED LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

Certification as an EOCP Waste Water Collection Operator – Level 1 (in good standing)

Driver’s License valid in the Province of British Columbia – Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement.

Additional Information:

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in emergency response efforts; including watermain breaks and snow-clearing activities during normal working hours and after hours, as weather conditions require.
