Position Overview

Do you want to build and protect the infrastructure that keeps Maple Ridge moving from safe roads and reliable water systems to resilient drainage and well-planned development? Municipal infrastructure shapes everyday life. As an Engineering Technologist, you will turn plans into practical, lasting solutions, balancing technical detail, community needs, construction realities and sound stewardship of public funds.

This is a hands‑on technical role for someone who enjoys variety: preparing designs and budgets, reviewing development applications, coordinating capital projects, solving issues in the field and helping ensure municipal infrastructure is ready for today and tomorrow.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST

Salary: $47.02 - $55.55 per hour
What You’ll Do
  • Reporting to a supervisor, you will research, develop, schedule and administer municipal infrastructure programs, studies and capital projects. Your work will support the operation, maintenance, emergency repair, renewal and construction of:
  • Roads, sidewalks and street lighting
  • Water distribution systems
  • Storm and sanitary sewer systems
  • Drainage, erosion control and site-grading works
  • Mechanical and related municipal infrastructure systems
  • Prepare cost estimates, technical reports, recommendations, schedules and annual and long-range program budgets.
  • Prepare and review infrastructure designs, drawings, plans, specifications, tenders and Requests for Proposals.
  • Support consultant selection, administer contracts and monitor consultant work to confirm alignment with City requirements, project objectives and approved plans.
  • Review engineering submissions for subdivision, rezoning, development and building permit applications, including grading, servicing and infrastructure-impact considerations.
  • Conduct site inspections to assess construction progress, verify compliance, identify deficiencies and investigate concerns related to grading, drainage, soil stability and municipal engineering requirements.
  • Issue relevant permits and advance approved development applications for further processing.
  • Provide clear, practical technical guidance to internal departments, developers, property owners, consultants, contractors, utility companies and members of the public.
  • Maintain accurate project, inspection, development and enforcement records, reports, correspondence and statistics.
  • Analyze infrastructure capacity and servicing impacts and develop recommendations that support effective decision-making.
  • Contribute to updates to engineering policies, procedures, bylaws and servicing standards.
  • Provide technical support to departmental staff on software and computer applications, including minor troubleshooting and coordination with vendors on enhancements or issues.

You will help ensure that growth is well planned, construction is accountable and City infrastructure is built and maintained to strong technical and municipal standards. Your work will have a visible impact across the community from a development site under construction to the underground systems residents rely on every day.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of municipal design, engineering standards and land servicing requirements, including relevant bylaws, policies, regulations and permitting processes.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the design, construction and installation of municipal utilities such as roads, water, stormwater and sanitary systems, including soil mechanics, stabilization and erosion control.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering practices and the interpretation of engineering plans, specifications, contract documents and related technical data.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering and mapping software including CAD and GIS computerized mapping principles, techniques and related software.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply municipal bylaws, subdivision and zoning regulations, the BC Building Code and other relevant legislation such as the Local Government Act and Community Charter.
  • Ability to plan, research, develop, schedule, and administer capital and development infrastructure projects, including preparing cost estimates, managing budgets and coordinating tendering processes, while ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to prepare, review and interpret engineering designs, plans, and technical drawings for accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Ability to analyze infrastructure capacities, evaluate development impacts and prepare detailed reports with recommendations.
  • Ability to provide technical advice, direction and interpretation of engineering and land development requirements to developers, contractors, consultants, municipal staff and the public and to effectively address inquiries and concerns.
  • Ability to review subdivision, development, rezoning and building permit applications for compliance with municipal bylaws, grading requirements and engineering standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations and resolve compliance issues.
  • Ability to conduct site inspections to ensure construction and land development projects comply with approved plans, bylaws and regulations and to investigate and resolve issues related to grading, soil stability, erosion control and infrastructure servicing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records, reports and correspondence related to engineering projects and development applications.
Desireable Education And Experience

Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Engineering Technology or related discipline, plus considerable related municipal experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Licences And Certificates
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as an Applied Science Technologist within the Province of British Columbia or Engineer in Training (EIT) with Engineering and Geoscientist of BC.
  • Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of BC.
