Job summary

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a proactive Recreation Leader 3 to lead and inspire children’s programs for ages 3 to 12. You will plan and deliver indoor and outdoor activities, organize day camps and events, and mentor volunteers and junior staff.

Strong organizational and safety skills are essential. Applicants should have completion of Grade 12 with related courses, First Aid/CPR, and experience in children’s programming.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 and supplemented by courses related to the work, plus some related experience.
• Valid Standard/Intermediate First Aid and CPR/AED, Level C.

RECREATION LEADER 3 (CHILDREN SERVICES)

POSITION OVERVIEW

We're looking for someone with a strong background in delivering fun, engaging programs in both indoor and outdoor settings. Experience in organizing and facilitating a variety of activities—including day camps, out trips, themed events, safety programs, early years initiatives, and licensed childcare for school-aged children—is essential. As a Recreation Leader 3, you’ll play a key role in creating memorable experiences for children by organizing and leading group activities that are active, social, nature-based, artistic, and event-focused. You’ll help shape inclusive and welcoming environments where every child feels safe and supported. In this front-line leadership role, you’ll model professionalism and foster positive engagement throughout the program.We’re looking for someone who is organized, adaptable, and confident in their ability to solve problems and calmly navigate challenging situations. You’ll be expected to exercise sound judgment within established policies and procedures and follow both written and verbal directions from supervisors. Experience in maintaining accurate documentation, including waivers, daily logs, and safety reports is also required.

In This Role You Will:

• Provides instruction, leadership and support for a variety of social, active and recreational programs, special events, camps and nature based activities, including out-trips; assists in leadership and mentorship of volunteers and junior level staff; assists in developing, planning and evaluating programs; prepares outlines, materials and instructions for same.


• Organizes supplies, program and equipment and other resources necessary for the day to day program.


• Completes documentation and report writing as it relates to program participants as required.


• Promotes interest and encourages participation in program activities; responds to immediate inquiries and refers issues as necessary.


• Monitors facility and equipment for safety, security and maintenance requirements; enforces rules and regulations, and responds to incidents as required.


• Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and instruction for preschool and school aged children, youth and adults.


• Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work.


• Working knowledge of modern office methods and procedures.


• Ability to participate in planning and implementing programs and activities and to provide leadership and instruction.


• Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.


• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with program participants, parents and external agencies.


• Ability to assist in leadership of volunteers and junior level staff.


• Skill in the operation of equipment used in the work.

Education and Experience

Completion of Grade 12 and supplemented by courses related to the work, plus some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licences and Certificates

• Valid Standard/Intermediate First Aid and CPR/AED, Level C.


• *A current, valid Standard First Aid and CPR–C (Level C) certificate is required and must be attached; applications without valid certification will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• 20 hours of Responsible Adult Training for working with children


• Food Safe Certificate


• High Five Training – Principals of Healthy Child Development

Hours of Work

This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours (Hours of work are governed by Schedule B (C, J) of the Collective Agreement alongside the Letter of Understanding for Workers in Children's/Youth Services and Recreation Access).
