ENGINEERING INSPECTOR 1 POSITION OVERVIEW We are seeking a detail-oriented and safety-conscious Engineering Inspector I to join our City Engineering Inspector’s team. This position involves technical inspectional and regulatory field work of moderate complexity to ensure that work carried out by private contractors and utility companies complies with the City's standards, bylaws, and regulations. The role also supports materials testing, cost estimating, and field reporting, with significant public contact requiring excellent customer service and communication skills.
The successful candidate will also be tasked with completing specific projects, including:
- Evaluating sight-line visibility at intersections to support traffic safety.
- Coordinating the work of contractors during construction and maintenance activities.
- Measuring sewer flow to assist in infrastructure assessments and upgrades.
- Performing remedial work at intersections to improve safety and access.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Inspecting utility installations such as gas, power, and telecommunications infrastructure to ensure compliance with municipal regulations.
- Reviewing site work related to driveway access, culvert installations, and sidewalk construction.
- Responding to public inquiries and complaints in a professional and solution-oriented manner.
- Conducting field reviews of storm sewer installations and assisting in the testing of construction materials.
- Inspecting road paving for quality and material compliance; estimating costs of repairs or damages to utilities.
- Preparing inspection reports, correspondence, and maintaining accurate field records.
- Supporting fieldwork related to drainage, road conditions, and infrastructure service issues.The ideal candidate brings technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a strong service-oriented approach to every project along with the following qualifications:
- High school graduation supplemented by technical training in civil engineering or construction inspection.
- Experience in municipal inspection work or civil construction is preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of municipal infrastructure systems and construction practices.
- Familiarity with sight-line assessments, sewer flow measurement, and road safety standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on public service and resolving community concerns.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and ensure compliance with relevant standards.
- Proficiency in field documentation and estimating project costs.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the improvement and maintenance of community infrastructure while working closely with both the public and project partners.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEHigh school graduation is preferably supplemented by undergraduate courses related to engineering technology. Some experience in construction work or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Preferably certification as a Public Works Inspector One (Public Works Inspectors Society).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESSound knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation of specific Municipal services and public utilities.Sound knowledge of the Municipal standards, requirements, regulations and specific by-law provisions governing the work performed.Working knowledge of elementary surveying methods and practices.Ability to perform inspectional and regulatory work of limited variety and complexity.Ability to exercise tact, impartiality and discretion in dealing with external contacts and the general public.Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans and prepare and maintain records, reports and other material related to the work.Skill in the use of testing, calculating and basic survey tools and equipment
Additional Information
This is a temporary full-time position for approximately six months which may be extended or concluded due to unforeseen circumstances.
