Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of and experience working with the Six Nations community.
• Understanding of Six Nations culture and community dynamics.
• Post-secondary education in health, social work, or science or equivalent experience.
• Interest in Indigenous health research and learning.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
• Willingness to travel within approximately 40 km of Ohsweken (Ohsweken, Hamilton, Brantford, etc.).
• Must pass criminal record check (Vulnerable Sector).
• Ability to follow privacy and confidentiality guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-person surveys with study participants in a respectful manner.
• Assist with data collection, literature reviews, and data presentations as needed.
• Support recruitment events and community outreach activities.
• Prepare summaries, reports, and presentations; communicate progress to supervisors.
• Attend project meetings and trainings and comply with OCAP and TCPS2 guidance.

• Some post-secondary education in health, social work, or a science related field; or equivalent education and experience

POSITION TITLE: Community Health Survey Project Assistant

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and receives supervision from the Senior Manager of Population Health Data, and functional supervision from the CHS Outreach Lead or the CHS Project Coordinator.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The CHS Project Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Community Health Survey (Onkwehón:we Health Check-In) research activities. This will consist primarily of completing electronic surveys with participants and assisting where needed in other departmental research projects. This survey project will support the identification of health trends as well as determinants of health within the community. The project will significantly contribute to the planning of service provision to the community and where advocacy for additional resources needs to take place.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• TECHNICAL
• Complete electronic surveys with recruited participants, in a sensitive and respectful (trauma-informed) manner
• Provides health or related service information to survey participants as needed
• Support other activities related to the implementation of the Onkwehón:we Health Check-In as needed. This may include literature reviews, data presentations (graphs, charts), reports, knowledge translation
• Attend meetings for the relevant projects and related activities
• Report regularly to supervisor on activities, survey completion and any problems or errors found with the survey
• Receive training as needed, such as OCAP, TCPS2, research techniques, survey administration
• Abide by OCAP® principles and convey any ethical concerns or questions to Senior Manager of Population Health Data
• Support CHS Outreach Lead in community recruitment events or initiatives as needed
• Provide support as needed on other research projects related to community health
• ADMINISTRATIVE
• Conducts in-person surveys with study participants
• Ensures the adherence to department, Community Health Survey Project policies and procedures
• Seeks guidance and direction from Senior Manager of Population Health Data, CHS Project Coordinator or CHS Outreach Lead as needed
• Assists in creating presentations, social media to promote effective community awareness as needed
• Assists in any tasks related to the Community Health Survey as needed
• Assists in any tasks related to other departmental research projects as needed
• COMMUNICATION
• Communicates progress regularly to Senior Manager of Population Health Data, CHS Outreach Lead or CHS Project Coordinator as appropriate
• Summarizes results during various phases of the project via written summaries reports, or by providing meeting updates
• Ability to efficiently work individually and in teams
• OTHER RELATED DUTIES:
• Will be required to perform other job-related duties as may be requested for the scope of the role
• Provide support if needed to the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan by ensuring awareness of the plan and assistance as instructed by the Executive Director of Data Analytics & Insights
• It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work has extensive public contact, is subject to deadlines and interruptions and addresses sensitive topics. Working in-person, in pairs or alone and at various locations (Six Nations and surrounding communities). PPE (masks) may be required for the safety of participants and workers. Surveys will be done face-to-face with participants who may be unvaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Work at times may be subject to weekend or evening hours. The employee may be reporting to more than one supervisor at a time if working on different projects, so must be able to prioritize and manage time.

Other Related Skills:

• Previous experience in a Research Assistant role or similar an asset
• Experience in trauma-informed research is considered an asset
• Must have, or be willing to obtain TCPS2 and/or OCAP certification or other training
• Strong awareness of behaviour cues which may signal participant distress
• Good verbal, and written communication skills

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Executive Director of Data Analytics & Insights, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council, Government Agencies, and the public.
