Job Details Job Location: Remote East Coast - Linthicum, MD Position Type: Full Time Salary Range: $105000.00 - $115000.00 Salary Description

Position Summary:

The Underwriting Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day workflow of a team of mortgage underwriters, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant credit decisions. This role acts as a bridge between underwriting and key stakeholders across sales and operations, supporting departmental goals through pipeline management, mentorship, and process execution. The Team Lead combines expert-level knowledge of underwriting guidelines with strong leadership skills to drive performance, service, and quality across the team.

Qualifications:

  • College degree in business, finance or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of mortgage underwriting experience.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) certification with at least two (2) years of DE experience required.
  • VA SAR/Credit Authority with at least two (2) years of experience preferred (in progress may be considered).
  • Familiarity with a wide range of loan products, including Bond, Jumbo, USDA, and specialty programs.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state lending regulations, along with agency/investor guidelines (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and support underwriting team members in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in mortgage loan origination systems and underwriting technology tools.
  • High attention to detail with sound analytical and credit decision-making abilities.

Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage daily underwriting pipeline to ensure timely credit decisions and meet service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Support underwriters with complex files and perform second-level reviews as needed.
  • Underwrite files within delegated authority to maintain productivity and expertise.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team members; support training and onboarding initiatives.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for internal departments including sales, processing, and operations.
  • Approve, suspend, decline, or counteroffer loans in accordance with investor and company guidelines.
  • Ensure data integrity, complete documentation, and compliance with regulatory and investor standards.
  • Monitor team performance and contribute to process improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Communicate updates on underwriting policies, procedures, and investor changes clearly and effectively.
  • Support the resolution of escalations, condition clearing, and exception requests.
  • Track and address delivery errors or audit findings on assigned files.
  • Lead team meetings and represent underwriting in leadership or cross-functional discussions.
  • Promote a culture of quality, compliance, collaboration, and customer service excellence.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and flexibility to work overtime or travel as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
