Software Engineering Manager - Sustaining Engineering

We are hiring a Software Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering, passionate about open source software, Linux, and cloud computing. This role involves leading a regional team, supporting continuous improvement of open source software by resolving customer-reported defects across the software stack, from kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. The team is well-resourced to ensure work-life balance and professional development.

Your primary responsibilities include supporting your team’s growth, technical leadership, influencing culture, and collaborating on strategy and execution.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Manage and lead a distributed engineering team.
2. Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development guidance.
3. Manage KPIs and training initiatives.
4. Support timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various technologies including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
5. Represent Canonical positively in customer interactions.
6. Set expectations with other teams, management, and external stakeholders.
7. Promote modern software development practices.
8. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
9. Collaborate with other organizational teams.
10. Work remotely with up to 10% travel for internal and external events.

Qualifications:

• Experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar.
• Passion for software development.
• Leadership experience in complex problem resolution and bug fixes.
• Experience with version control systems like git.
• Proficiency with debugging tools such as gdb or crash.
• Strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code.
• Excellent English communication skills.
• Experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
• Knowledge of Open Source and its business models.
• People management experience in support organizations is a plus.
