We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-focused senior technologist with a passion for Linux, looking to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll thrive here.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, which are used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you will drive operations automation in both private and public clouds, utilizing open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical’s automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers on product operation at scale, contribute to open source projects, and collaborate with global teams to deliver excellent services.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and Gitops initiatives as an embedded tech lead.
• Collaborate with IS architects to align solutions with architectural vision.
• Design and develop services as products for internal use.
• Advance infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and improving processes.
• Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds.
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
• Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance analysis skills, using observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
• Support and collaborate with globally distributed engineering and operations teams.
• Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
• Share knowledge through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
• Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.

Requirements

• Modern hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across clouds.
• Product mindset focused on developing products, not just solutions.
• Proficiency in Python with large projects experience.
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
• Knowledge of managing and deploying cloud infrastructure via code.
• Practical Linux networking, routing, and firewall skills.
• Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases.
• Hands-on enterprise Linux server administration experience.
• Strong understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication skills in English across various mediums.
• Motivated troubleshooting skills from kernel to web layers.
• Adaptability, quick learner, and flexible attitude.
• Interest in fast-changing environments and open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
