Job summary

hireworks is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join our client’s payments platform and bring Azure and AWS production estates under unified management. You will instrument, document, and secure running services while collaborating with a Staff SRE to set technical direction.

You will work on CI/CD improvements, on-call rotations, and apply AI-assisted development tools in a controlled way to ensure safe deployments. This role supports flexible, remote work within your home country.

Qualifications

• 8+ years engineering experience with senior SRE responsibilities in production infra
• Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or related field
• Hands-on PCI-DSS experience in production operations
• Deep Azure experience (VM-based)
• SQL Server or Aurora MySQL knowledge for diagnostics
• Strong observability with at least one event-based platform
• Experience with Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD tooling
• Solid IaC experience in one of Terraform/Crossplane/OpenTofu/CDK/CloudFormation/Bicep

Position Overview

Our client's payments infrastructure spans two clouds and two very different eras of application architecture: a VM-based Azure estate needing security hardening and modernization, and a modern AWS-based events platform. The SRE function is newly combined and growing, bringing together infrastructure ownership that used to be spread across teams. This is a chance to bring individual systems under real operational management: instrumenting them, documenting them, and securing them. You'll work alongside a Staff SRE who sets the team's overall technical direction.

Key Responsibilities

• Bring individual systems in the Azure and AWS estates under management: instrumentation, monitoring, documentation, and runbooks
• Support Azure security remediation: RBAC cleanup, privileged-access review, and network exposure fixes
• Operate and support the AWS-based events platform, including ECS-based services and Lambda/Step Functions workflows
• Contribute to CI/CD and release-safety improvements
• Take a seat in the shared, limited-hours on-call rotation for the events platform
• Use AI-assisted development tools in a practical, controlled way, with human review as the final gate before anything ships

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of overall engineering experience, including solid experience as a Senior SRE or equivalent, operating production infrastructure at scale
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Hands-on PCI compliance experience: familiarity with PCI-DSS requirements and PCI-aware production operations
• Deep Azure experience required (legacy, VM-based environments)
• Working knowledge of database operations (SQL Server and/or a managed relational database such as Aurora MySQL) sufficient to diagnose performance and reliability issues
• Deep observability knowledge: monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and incident response, including in-depth, hands-on experience with at least one event-based observability platform (Datadog, Honeycomb, New Relic, or comparable)
• Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) or similar CI/CD tooling
• Deep familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code, including hands-on expertise with at least one IaC language (Terraform, Crossplane, OpenTofu, CDK, CloudFormation, or Bicep)
• Enough software fluency to read and debug application code, and to separate infrastructure symptoms from application-level defects
• Experience modernizing legacy .NET systems and the infrastructure underneath them Proficiency with Claude Code, Codex, or comparable AI-assisted development tools

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with automated testing frameworks
• Experience with event-driven or queue-based AWS architectures (EventBridge, Lambda, Step Functions, DynamoDB)
• Experience joining a newly combined or fast-growing infrastructure team and helping bring it under a more consistent structure
