We're expanding our engineering team globally to build robust payment processing solutions for the US market. This remote position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge US payment infrastructure while being based in São Paulo.

The Role

We're seeking a Senior Backend Payments Engineer based in São Paulo to join our core engineering team. You'll be instrumental in building mission-critical payment processing systems that handle high-volume transactions, working with modern cloud technologies and contributing to architectural decisions that will scale our platform internationally.

Collaboration: Core working hours overlap with US Central Time

Employment Type: CLT (Full-time Employee)

What You'll Build

• Core Payment Processing Systems - Design and implement high-throughput, low-latency payment processing infrastructure for US merchants
• Multi-Payment Method Support - Build systems supporting US payment methods including credit/debit cards, ACH transfers, Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL), and Real-Time Payments (RTP)
• Robust APIs - Develop secure, well-documented public and internal APIs following US financial industry standards
• Compliance & Security Infrastructure - Implement PCI DSS compliance, fraud detection, and US regulatory requirements
• Settlement & Reconciliation Systems - Build accurate financial reporting and money movement tracking for US-based transactions
• Backend: Ruby on Rails (primary), Python microservices
• Frontend: React (for internal tools)
• Observability: DataDog for logging, metrics, and APM
• Development: GitHub, Jira, OpenAPI 3.0, Redocly
• Methodology: Agile/Scrum with Continuous Delivery

What We're Looking For:

Required Experience

• 5+ years of backend software development experience
• 3+ years with Ruby on Rails in production environments
• 2+ years building payment processing, financial, or high-transaction volume systems • Strong experience with API design and development (REST, webhooks)
• Database optimization and performance tuning (PostgreSQL preferred)
• Understanding of authentication, encryption, and security best practices

Payments & Fintech Experience

• Experience with US payment processing systems (card networks, ACH, wire transfers)
• Knowledge of PCI DSS compliance and US financial security standards
• Understanding of settlement, reconciliation, and financial reporting for US transactions
• Familiarity with fraud detection and risk management systems • Experience with high-availability, fault-tolerant system design
• Knowledge of BNPL (Buy-Now-Pay-Later) or RTP (Real-Time Payments) systems preferred

US Market Knowledge (Preferred)

• Understanding of US payment ecosystem (Visa/Mastercard networks, ACH, FedNow, RTP)
• Experience with US financial regulations (anti-money laundering, KYC)
• Knowledge of payment processor integrations and merchant acquiring

Professional Skills

Fluent English (written and verbal) for US team collaboration

Strong technical documentation and communication skills

Experience in startup or high-growth environments

Collaborative mindset with remote-first team experience

Understanding of US business hours and willingness to accommodate some overlap
