Overview of Middle School Spanish Teacher Position

As a Middle School Spanish Teacher at Moravian Academy's Historic Downtown Campus, you will lead sixth through eighth grade students in a scaffolded, proficiency-based Spanish program grounded in best practices for second language acquisition. Through engaging, research-informed instruction that emphasizes communication, cultural understanding, and real-world application, you will support students in developing their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Ideal candidates will understand the developmental needs of middle school learners and create a supportive environment that fosters confidence, curiosity, and meaningful learning. Additional responsibilities may include supporting Lower School Spanish instruction, leading an advisory, teaching electives, and contributing to all aspects of our student-centered middle school community.

Responsibilities

  1. Effective Instruction: Design and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate Spanish lessons for students in grades 6-8, grounded in research-based strategies for second language acquisition and aligned with ACTFL standards.

  2. Differentiated Learning: Adapt instruction to meet the varied proficiency levels and needs of students, incorporating tools such as comprehensible input, scaffolding, and multimodal activities.

  3. Collaborative Teaching: Partner with colleagues across disciplines and campuses to support interdisciplinary connections and enhance student learning through shared themes and cross-curricular projects.

  4. Student Development: Promote students' growth as confident communicators and culturally aware citizens by fostering risk-taking, curiosity, and a positive language-learning mindset.

  5. Assessment and Feedback: Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to measure student progress in language proficiency. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and families and maintain accurate records of student achievement.

  6. Advisory Role: Serve as an advisor or co-advisor to a small group of middle school students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development through structured programming and daily relationship-building.

  7. Lower School Support: If scheduling allows, assist with Spanish instruction in the Lower School to promote vertical alignment and early language exposure.

  8. Community Engagement: Actively participate in school life, including electives, school events, and extracurricular activities. Embrace opportunities for professional development and contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture.

Experience & Skills

  1. Credentials: Bachelor's Degree in Education, Spanish, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

  2. Experience: Proven experience teaching middle school students, with a deep understanding of adolescent development and proficiency-based language instruction. Experience with ACTFL standards preferred.

  3. Language Pedagogy: Strong foundation in second language acquisition theory and practice, including the ability to support learners at varying levels of proficiency.

  4. Commitment to Student Development: A deep commitment to the intellectual, emotional, and social growth of middle school students, with a focus on building communication skills and intercultural competence.

What We Offer

  4. Professional Development: We prioritize the ongoing growth of our educators through workshops, conferences, and mentorship.

  5. Impact: As part of Moravian Academy, you will have the chance to influence not only the academic growth of our students but also their personal development as global citizens.
