Overview of Lower School Classroom Teacher Position
The Historic Downtown Campus of Moravian Academy seeks a dedicated and collaborative Lower School teacher with expertise in elementary education. This position involves teaching in a self-contained classroom and working closely with specialist teachers to support the academic and personal growth of each child. The ideal candidate will demonstrate deep knowledge of child development, a passion for student-centered learning, and a commitment to fostering belonging in the classroom community. This position reports to the Director of the Downtown Campus.
Responsibilities
- Classroom Instruction: Teach core subjects including mathematics, language arts, and social studies in a self-contained classroom using the school's adopted curricula, such as Reveal Math and Wit & Wisdom. Plan and deliver rigorous, developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with Moravian Academy's academic standards and values.
- Instructional Design: Create purposeful and well-structured units and lessons that incorporate research-based practices, direct instruction, effective differentiation, clear learning objectives, and aligned assessment. Use data to inform instruction and adapt teaching methods to meet the varied needs of learners.
- Student-Centered Learning: Cultivate a classroom environment that emphasizes curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Design hands-on, inquiry-driven learning experiences that foster independent thinking and meaningful engagement.
- Inclusive Practice: Build a welcoming and affirming classroom community for all learners. Employ inclusive teaching practices that reflect an understanding of diverse identities, perspectives, and experiences. Differentiate instruction and materials to meet the needs of all students.
- Assessment and Feedback: Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and families. Write detailed narrative progress reports each trimester.
- Family Partnerships: Establish strong, positive relationships with families. Communicate regularly through school-supported tools, conferences, and personal outreach to share student growth and collaborate in support of each child.
- Professional Collaboration: Participate actively in faculty, grade-level, and cross-divisional meetings and committees. Collaborate closely with colleagues to align curriculum, share best practices, and support student transitions between grades.
- Professionalism: Demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a growth mindset. Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute positively to school-wide initiatives and community events.
Experience & Skills
- Credentials: Bachelor's Degree Education, or a closely related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Experience: Proven experience teaching elementary aged students.
- Commitment to Student Development: A deep commitment to the intellectual, emotional, and social growth of elementary school students, with a focus on building communication skills and intercultural competence.
