The Canonical Kernel Team seeks talented experts and industry veterans with a proven track record in operating systems kernel development or low-level system engineering to lead architecture, implementation, and delivery of aspects of the Ubuntu Linux kernel, including but not limited to:

• Driving engagements with Silicon and Cloud partners for platform solutions
• Leading mitigation of vulnerabilities and hardening the kernel
• Enhancing performance and correctness for reliability and speed
• Streamlining packaging and distribution of third-party components
• Scaling Ubuntu Linux delivery to meet quality and schedule standards

While not a formal managerial role, the candidate should possess strong leadership and people skills to guide engineers and coordinate with external teams.

We seek individuals with deep technical expertise in operating system kernels and distributions, and a proactive leadership attitude. Although experience length is flexible, we look for candidates with the demonstrated technical equivalent of 15+ years of industry experience.

Location: Remote roles available in every timezone, with some responsibilities region-specific.

Key responsibilities:

• Set technical direction and lead delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernel aspects
• Coordinate initiatives with management and teams
• Collaborate with senior Kernel Team leadership to ensure Ubuntu’s leadership in Linux distributions

Candidate requirements:

• Self-motivated, well-organized, and able to thrive remotely
• Strong English communication skills
• Expertise in C programming
• Experience with *nix kernel and distributions; Linux experience preferred
• Scripting skills in Python and Bash
• Proficiency with git
• Experience with software packaging formats; Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience is a plus
• Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks

Nice-to-have skills:

• RTOS and real-time performance analysis experience
• Kernel patching and debugging experience
• Knowledge of device drivers, BSPs, low-level system engineering
• Experience with Rust in Linux kernel context
