We're looking for an innovative Senior Research Associate (Brazil) with a unique combination of skills who wants to play a significant role in tackling climate change.

You’ll be working across our Research Unit and Climainfo, the Brazilian branch of GSCC. The Research Unit provides insight and analysis and produces briefings for the more comprehensive GSCC network, journalists and our partners. The Team works across Brazil and other relevant geographies. The role will report to Climainfo and the Research Unit. The role will be based at ClimaInfo and will report to the GSCC Research Unit.

This role will help design and undertake research to address the critical challenges of energy planning, fossil fuels, renewable energy and climate policies and actions. It will work closely with regional communications experts to provide insight to support deeper strategic approaches and produce analysis products for audiences of policymakers, investors, advocates, and journalists.

To succeed in this role, you'll need to be self-organised, naturally collaborative, great to work with and will value building strong working relationships. You'll know your stuff on current issues in climate policy and energy transition. You'll be an excellent researcher, a confident communicator, and able to write quickly and accurately for various audiences.

This is a research role embedded in the Brazil Team. We expect that you use your expertise to plan and deliver high-impact work collaboratively. You must be adept at working with colleagues from various disciplines. You'll have a proven record of taking work from inception to impact. Being able to think strategically about making change and different approaches to achieving it will be a big help.

This role would suit someone with a background as a researcher on the energy transition, an energy analyst or a specialist journalist who has been covering climate change and the energy transition.

How you'll contribute
  • Conduct research and analysis on fossil fuels, renewable energy, energy finance, and other related areas to advance our understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the energy transition in Brazil and South America.
  • Lead and manage research projects, including designing research methodologies, setting objectives, collaborating with team members, and producing timely and high-quality briefings, reports and presentations.
  • Stay abreast of the latest research advancements, policy developments, and technological innovations in climate change and energy transition, and integrate relevant findings into research projects.
  • Collaborate with research and communication experts and external stakeholders to identify research priorities.
  • Turn global research briefings into research that appeals to the Brazilian and South American context and vice versa.
Our ideal candidate has
  • Proven experience in conducting research, initiating and leading projects in the areas of climate change, fossil fuels, energy transition, renewable energy, and sustainable development in Brazil and South America.
  • Strong knowledge of climate change science, mitigation strategies and energy policies relevant to Brazil and South America.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and engaging with academia, government, industry, or civil society stakeholders.
  • The ability to confidently incorporate a climate justice lens into work and to work with others to develop intersectional approaches.
  • Experience in developing or contributing to communications or campaign strategies.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Portuguese as well as English, our working language. Spanish is desirable.
  • A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change.
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
  • The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment, working across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack, and email (Google Workspace).
