Investment Officer, Upstream Infrastructure, LAC Region

Join to apply for the Investment Officer, Upstream Infrastructure, LAC Region role at IFC.

Description

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. We work in more than 100 countries, using our capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities. Our mission is to leverage the power of the private sector to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity on a livable planet.

IFC's new growth strategy aims to stimulate investment in riskier markets by working “Upstream” at the pre-investment stage to develop projects and markets. This involves creating a broader product offering, preparing clients for investment, focusing on value addition and risk management, and adopting a long-term perspective.

The focus on infrastructure includes increasing access to services, supporting local companies, exploring new investment opportunities, developing financial products like Public Private Partnerships, and building partnerships with global and regional players.

The Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Infrastructure department originates and commits financing across sectors like energy, transportation, water, telecom, and natural resources. The department includes units dedicated to new business, portfolio, and upstream activities. The upstream team works closely with investment and portfolio teams to generate leads.

We seek an Investment Officer to support upstream/pre-investment work in the infrastructure sector in the LAC region, primarily focusing on Brazil. The role involves developing a high-quality pre-investment pipeline, supporting policy work, and collaborating across the World Bank Group. The position is based in São Paulo, Brazil.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with regional leads to develop a strong pipeline by assessing market trends and opportunities.
  • Lead pre-investment and advisory initiatives to create investment pipelines and convert opportunities into bankable projects.
  • Evaluate investment opportunities focusing on credit quality, viability, and development impact.
  • Support transaction processing, negotiations, and documentation.
  • Develop client and country strategies, engagement plans, and pitch materials.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies and implementation plans for projects.
  • Design scalable solutions like “Scaling Solar” and “Sustainability Linked Finance” for broader application.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of pre-investment projects.
  • Assist in policy reforms and regulatory changes, coordinating with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with World Bank colleagues to identify investment opportunities.

Selection Criteria

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related fields.
  • 6-8 years of experience in project development, advisory, or consulting in emerging markets, with strong project finance or corporate finance background.
  • Understanding of infrastructure sectors like power, transportation, utilities, or telecoms.
  • Experience managing projects and programs, including developing business models and conducting market analysis.
  • Innovative thinking and ability to develop new ideas and projects from scratch.
  • Ability to engage with private sector, governments, and stakeholders to promote market development.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and teamwork skills in a multicultural environment.
  • Proficiency in English and Portuguese; Spanish is a plus.
