About Lines

LINES is a real-time community-driven going out platform. We show live videos of the best venues, line ETAs, have detailed what's on listings and offer deals to our users across London, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Tens of thousands of users rely on LINES every weekend to decide where to go out. We're expanding quickly and transitioning from Firebase to our own AWS-based backend to support new features and scale.

What you'll do

• Build and maintain backend services that power location-based features
• Design APIs and data flows that are efficient, reliable, and easy to integrate on mobile and web
• Own the full lifecycle of backend features : from idea and architecture to deployment and monitoring
• Create and manage scraper infrastructure (cron jobs, site parsers, normalization, deduplication) to feed our event database
• Architect and implement feed systems (fanout, ranking, filtering) for building real-time, personalized timelines similar to Instagram or Twitter
• Integrate with third-party APIs and services (e.g. chat, maps, video, etc…)
• Collaborate closely with the founder and other engineers on product direction and system design
• Improve internal tools and workflows to reduce manual work and scale operations

What we expect from you

• You're a builder : you take ownership, unblock yourself, and care about getting things done
• You think in terms of systems, tradeoffs, and long-term maintainability
• You're comfortable working in an early-stage environment where priorities shift fast
• You're pragmatic : you write clean code, but you don't get stuck polishing when things need to ship
• You communicate clearly and can defend or adapt your technical decisions
• You know when and how to apply caching (e.g. Redis) to improve performance
• You’ve worked with message queues or pub / sub systems (like SNS, SQS, or similar)
• You're comfortable working with scrapers : parsing HTML, handling rate limits, and making things resilient
• You’re fine working across the stack when needed, even if your focus is backend

Tech Stack

• Backend : NestJS (Node.js), TypeScript, Firebase (Auth, Firestore – legacy), AWS (Elastic Beanstalk, SNS, S3, Lambda)
• Frontend : Next.js (ISR, Streaming), Expo (React Native)
• Infra : AWS, Cloudflare, Vercel, GitHub Actions

Nice to have

• Experience with Expo or React Native
• Experience working on real-time data, chat, or video platforms
• Familiarity with Firebase (helpful during the migration phase)
