We are hiring an Engineering Manager for Ceph & Distributed Storage. With over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created daily, we aim to help teams store data on open source storage solutions using commodity hardware—safely, affordably, and simply.

Our goal is to make Ceph easy to install, manage, and use—from large enterprise data centers to edge sites. We believe distributed storage should be straightforward, and we are excited to make Ceph accessible enough for everyone to use.

As an engineering manager at Canonical, you should be technically skilled, but your primary responsibility is to run an effective team and develop your colleagues. You will help them grow professionally and personally, ensure high-quality work, and collaborate well with colleagues and the community. Technical leadership and a background in software engineering are prerequisites. You will lead, challenge, and develop engineers, influence company culture positively, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategy and execution. You will also oversee sound software architecture, quality, testing, and documentation.

What you'll do

• Lead a team building a Ceph-focused software-defined storage solution
• Build and manage a globally distributed engineering team
• Develop your team through coaching, mentoring, and feedback
• Contribute technically to your team's goals, demonstrating sound engineering principles
• Set realistic schedules with feedback loops for continuous improvement
• Manage expectations with other teams and external stakeholders
• Promote modern, agile software development practices
• Maintain a culture of quality and engineering excellence
• Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
• Participate actively in leadership and collaborate with other leaders
• Work remotely with up to 20% travel for internal and external events

Who you are

• You have a software engineering background, preferably with Python and C++ experience
• You have experience managing storage clusters on Linux, ideally with Ceph
• You embrace new technologies and push boundaries
• You enjoy developing and growing people, with a proven track record
• You are interested in building products that improve software and infrastructure operations
• You are knowledgeable and passionate about software development
• You have experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers to deliver high-quality software on time
• You have solid experience working in agile environments
