Reducing friction between moving parts can improve energy efficiency and performance of mechanical systems. The importance of reducing friction has extended to surfaces that carry electrical current. The project aims to enhance the surface and tribological properties of coated steel parts that work under applied electrical voltages using plasma-assisted surface treatments. The postdoc researcher will investigate the effect of the passage of electric current through the coating on the tribological properties, and understand how the electric current affects different types of coatings.
It is intended to obtain low friction coefficients of bearings working in electric or hybrid engines and high-load wind turbines. Two different types of coatings will be used as samples: amorphous carbon (a-C) doped with a) copper and b) nickel, to provide electrical conductivity to the a-C coatings. The coatings will be deposited using the Magnetron Sputtering PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition)technique at the Plasma Surface Treatment Laboratory of the University of São Paulo's Engineering School (POLI-USP) in Brazil. After deposition, the coatings will be tested in an electrified tribometer developed at POLI-USP'sSurface Phenomena Laboratory. The samples will be characterized by Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy, to better understand the phenomena occurring on the surface.
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 12,000.00 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.
