This role offers an opportunity to lead a field engineering team, assisting customers in understanding and deploying Canonical's open source solutions across public clouds and private data centers. The scope includes technologies from Ubuntu to virtualization, private cloud, Kubernetes, and advanced open source platforms like MLops and data solutions. As Canonical expands into new industries such as telecom, finance, healthcare, and media, we develop innovative open source solutions tailored to these sectors.

We believe engineering managers should be excellent engineers, comfortable troubleshooting and engaging in technical presales. They should contribute technically but primarily focus on guiding their team’s direction, focus, and output. We support growth in management and soft skills for engineers interested in leadership.

The role of a Cloud Field Engineering Manager at Canonical

The team of cloud solutions architects at Canonical works directly with customers to design private and public cloud solutions tailored to their workloads. The portfolio includes on-premise solutions like Openstack, MicroCloud, Ceph, and deployable solutions such as Kubernetes, Kubeflow, Spark, and PostgreSQL. Managers oversee deployment, testing, and handover, and participate in presales to advise clients technically.

The manager is responsible for team management, talent development, technical representation, and collaboration with other teams and clients. Active participation in presales is also expected to meet quarterly goals.

Location:

This role is home-based, managing a team within your time zone.

Daily responsibilities include:
  • Leading and developing a team of engineers across presales and professional services
  • Resolving customer issues and promoting technologies as a trusted advisor
  • Remote work within a single major time zone
  • Mentoring and career development of team members
  • Monitoring team health indicators
  • Implementing disciplined engineering processes
  • Representing your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
  • Promoting best engineering and organizational practices
  • Planning and tracking project progress
  • Participating in leadership team collaborations
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of cloud computing technologies (Kubernetes, Openstack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph)
  • Practical Linux and networking skills
  • Experience in technical presales
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Passion for developing people and leadership experience
  • Organizational skills to ensure timely, high-quality results
  • High academic achievement (high school and preferably university)
  • Willingness to travel up to 40%
Additional skills (preferred):
  • Spanish or French language skills
  • Python programming
  • Experience with external partners and stakeholder feedback
