The Promoting a Collaborative Bioeconomy in the Amazon with Indigenous Women project, seeks a Project Manager to oversee its implementation in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador. The project collaborates with Indigenous women leaders to promote innovative bioeconomy practices, integrating traditional knowledge to support Amazon conservation while enhancing women’s economic empowerment and human well-being.
POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Bolivia, Brazil (remote), Colombia, or Ecuador
The Project Manager will ensure the effective execution of the project, coordinating efforts across countries, fostering regional collaboration, and ensuring alignment with key stakeholders, including Indigenous communities/ organizations, governmental agencies, and partner organizations.
This position oversees all aspects of the project over the entire project cycle. This includes project planning, implementation, tracking, and reporting on deliverables and project status. The Project Manager works to ensure project results meet project standards and project deliverables are completed on time and within budget. Not responsible for directly supervising others but leads small ad-hoc country teams and acts as a technical resource to others.
Responsibilities
Project Coordination & Implementation
- Lead the execution of the Project, ensuring activities align with the Amazonia Indigenous Women´s Programmatic objectives.
- In coordination with the Knowledge Management Manager, update and oversee the execution of the project's annual planning, budget management, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
- In coordination with the Grants & Contracts Manager, supervise the implementation of the grants signed with each fellow within the framework of the project, ensuring their proper execution and delivery.
- In coordination with country teams and mentors, review and consolidate country-level reports into a comprehensive regional project report, integrating national and regional activities.
- Ensure all project activities are implemented effectively to achieve desired outcomes in Indigenous women's economic and social empowerment in bioeconomy.
- Identify trends and corrective actions to resolve problems and ensure future project efficiencies. Help identify tools, resources, and training that will facilitate project success.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Regional Exchange & Capacity Building
- Plan, program, and organize regional exchanges and capacity-building modules for Indigenous women leaders.
- Foster knowledge-sharing across participating countries to promote innovation in bioeconomy.
- Collaborate with Indigenous mentors, technical experts, and institutional partners to strengthen Indigenous women’s leadership.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
- Act as a liaison between mentors, project leads, operations teams, and communication specialists to resolve challenges and ensure smooth project execution.
- Engage with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, Indigenous organizations, and private sector partners, to strengthen regional collaboration.
- Ensure effective knowledge dissemination and integration of traditional Indigenous knowledge in bioeconomy initiatives.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning
- Collect and analyze project data to assess annual project delivery indicators, as well as impact, effectiveness, and areas for improvement.
- Work closely with the Amazon program team to ensure alignment with conservation and sustainable development goals.
- Document lessons learned and best practices for future editions of the Fellowship program.
Bioeconomy-Specific Initiatives
- In coordination with National Mentors, oversee the development of business plans with each fellow, providing strategic guidance and ensuring viability.
- Work alongside mentors and technical experts in each country to support Indigenous women in sustainable bioeconomy enterprises.
- Promote market access, financial resources, and policy advocacy to enable Indigenous women entrepreneurs.
- Manage consultancies that will be required to achieve Project´s objectives.
Reporting & Knowledge Management
- Ensure timely and high-quality reporting summaries and project narratives to the Knowledge Management Manager. Collaborate with HQ and Program finance and operations staff on project financial reporting.
- Provide information and contribute to the documentation of knowledge products, case studies, and policy recommendations to enhance the impact of Indigenous-led bioeconomy models.
People and Resource Management Responsibilities
- Does not have direct supervisory authority but provides feedback on team member and/or contract/partner staff and support personnel performance.
- Act as a technical or subject matter expert to peers and other staff.
- Manages an individual budget but decisions that bind or commit CI are approved by the immediate supervisor.
- Responsible for managing some public or private funds, monitoring results, and recommending follow-up action. Reviews for understanding and compliance with donor agreements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This is a regional and remote position that may require international and domestic travel up to 30% or more of employee time, sometimes in difficult travel conditions.
- This role will be an 18-month fixed-term assignment.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in international development, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Economics, or a related field.
- 4 to 6 years related work experience in project management, including planning and budgeting, grant reporting, impact assessment and sustainable development or Indigenous community programs, preferably in Latin America.
- Proven experience in managing multi-country programs, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador.
- Strong background in bioeconomy, Indigenous-led enterprises, and traditional knowledge integration.
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations, NGOs, government agencies, and international donors.
- Demonstrated expertise in gender-inclusive economic empowerment, with a focus on Indigenous women’s leadership and market access.
- Experience in facilitating regional knowledge exchanges and capacity-building programs.
- Knowledge of policy frameworks related to Indigenous rights, conservation, and sustainable business models in the Amazon region.
- Ability to diagnose problems and identify solutions.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Team player and able to work effectively with diverse works groups in a multicultural environment.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in written and spoken Spanish and English.
- Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, set priorities, and deliver quality results.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and under general supervision.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in related fields.
- Understanding of the economic and environmental issues facing developing countries and the local communities is strongly preferred.
- Specialized training or coursework in bioeconomy, conservation, Indigenous rights, or gender equity is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Portuguese is highly preferred.
