Job summary

Resend is hiring a backend engineer to build and operate a scalable email transport infrastructure, including SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing, retries, and throttling. You will improve deliverability, bounce handling, and delivery outcomes, while partnering on safety controls and incident response.

The role emphasizes reliability, ownership, and simple systems, with experience in TypeScript and Go. Fully remote in the Americas or European time zones, with occasional travel for team offsites.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Build and operate Resend’s email transport infrastructure (SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing, retries).
• Design throttling at domain, provider, customer, and IP levels; manage IP pools and warmups.
• Improve bounce/deferral classification and delivery outcomes; diagnose issues and improve safety.

Job description

Resend is building an accessible email platform for developers. This role is fully remote in the Americas or European time zones, with occasional travel for team offsites, conferences, and meetups. In this role, you will Build and operate Resend’s email transport infrastructure, including SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing, retries, backoff, and delivery controls. Design domain-, provider-, customer-, and IP-level throttling systems. Build infrastructure for shared and dedicated IP pools, warmups, and reputation-aware routing. Improve classification of bounces, deferrals, transient and hard failures, and delivery outcomes. Build tools for debugging delivery issues and make sending safer, more observable, and easier to operate. Partner with Trust & Safety and Core Sending on controls against abuse; participate in incident response and on-call for critical services.

You will be a great fit if you Have strong backend engineering experience and experience with high-volume email, messaging, communications, or infrastructure systems. Understand queues, workers, retries, idempotency, rate limits, backpressure, and distributed systems. Have experience or strong interest in SMTP, MTAs, DNS, bounces, deferrals, IP pools, and mailbox-provider behavior. Care about reliability and operational excellence; bring low ego, high ownership, and a taste for simple systems. It is a plus if you have Experience with high-workload applications and email best practices. Experience with TypeScript and Golang.

Compensation: $150,000–$170,000 USD, commensurate with experience.
