A leading research laboratory in Brazil is seeking a Senior Scientist to develop remote sensing algorithms and conduct investigations in atmospheric science. Ideal candidates will have a PhD and 8+ years of experience, particularly in remote sensing and data analysis. This role offers a competitive salary and the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in atmospheric and ionospheric studies.
Are you excited about advancing the frontiers of atmospheric and ionospheric science through cutting-edge remote sensing and space mission research?
Are you passionate about developing innovative retrieval algorithms and applying novel techniques, including machine learning, to maximize the value of atmospheric datasets?
Do you love working on complex scientific challenges that connect instrumentation, modeling, and analysis to uncover new insights into Earth and planetary environments?
If so, then we\'re looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!
The Atmospheres and Ionospheres Group (SRZ) of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Senior Scientist to develop and exploit remote sensing algorithms in the microwave regime and conduct scientific investigations of atmospheric/ionospheric/magnetospheric phenomena. The SRZ Group has a broad and active basic research program that focuses primarily on atmospheric/ionospheric science on the Earth and other planets. It has significant development programs in space instrumentation and mission design. Active Civil Space missions and projects in the group include TIMED, EZIE, AMPERE, SuperDARN, and SuperMAG. In addition, the Group is involved in multiple suborbital geospace and technology demonstration missions as well as multiple programs funded by National Security Space sponsors. In addition to building remote and in situ sensing instrument capabilities, the Group seeks to apply advances in modeling, simulation, and analysis capabilities afforded by increased computational power to augment and maximize the scientific understanding obtained from new and existing atmospheric and ionospheric datasets, both observational and simulated. This includes applications of machine-learning approaches to enhance the scientific return of current and future research and operational applications.
Conduct fundamental research in upper atmospheric and ionospheric physics.
Analyze ground- and space-based remote sensing datasets to uncover new insights.
Develop advanced retrieval algorithms that drive scientific discovery.
Design, build, and test innovative remote sensing instrumentation for future missions.
Present and publish your findings at leading conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
Lead and contribute to NASA and NSF grant proposals.
Shape the future by formulating novel concepts for upcoming space missions and instruments.

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to “touch” the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL has delivered solutions to national security challenges and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.
APL teams are developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun\'s influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.
