General Summary:

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking an Accountant to support its accounting and finance operations in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This role is a key part of the Record-To-Report and Procure-To-Pay functions for Vertex's Brazilian operations, responsible for managing the month-end process. The accountant will collaborate with the international accounting team, as well as teams across Vertex Brazil and the company's outsourced service provider.

The successful candidate will gain exposure to key accounting and reporting areas, offering development opportunities within the organization. They will leverage their analytical and accounting skills to suggest and implement improvements for continuous enhancement of processes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Monthly Responsibilities:

• Perform period-end accounting activities, including month-end close journals and Flux analysis for BS and PL.
• Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations in compliance with SOX 404, USGAAP, and BRGAAP standards.
• Ensure adherence to internal policies and SOX procedures.
• Assist with internal, SOX, and tax audits from local authorities.
• Coordinate with stakeholders within the international accounting and finance teams.
• Work with the outsourced service provider to review purchase requisitions and ensure timely invoice payments.

Other Responsibilities:

• Document and optimize accounting processes and best practices.
• Build trust and open communication across departments within Vertex Brazil and internationally.
• Improve processes, controls, and systems, including maintaining process documentation.
• Support ad-hoc accounting projects as needed.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Strong technical knowledge of accounting and finance processes.
• Experience preparing high-quality balance sheet reconciliations and identifying issues.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration at all levels.
• Proven negotiation and influencing skills across departments.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel; experience with Oracle R12, OBIEE, HFM, SMART View, or SAP is advantageous.
• Experience in Big 4, public audit, or international shared service environments within a SOX-compliant setting.
• Knowledge of direct tax processes.
• Fluent in English and Portuguese; Spanish is a plus.

Education and Experience:

• Recently qualified or working towards an accounting qualification.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Experience in a corporate accounting environment.
