Function/Area: Underwriting

Reporting to: Class Manager

Position Summary

Manages an underwriting team and is accountable for the business results through profitability, business development, analysis and monitoring of a book of business. Under general management direction, works within broad limits of authority requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. May have regional, industry segment or company-wide scope of responsibility.

The roles and responsibilities of the Legal Branch Representative can be found in a separate document provided by the HR team.

Key Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Manage the work activities, performance and development of subordinate staff.
  • Coach, lead and develop underwriters and participate in the development of underwriting training.
  • Make recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy to management.
  • Review and manage the application of underwriting policy and pricing for all risks within an assigned book of business.
  • Prepare and present operational reports to management.
  • Drive regional and branch initiatives and business strategies.
  • Lead the process of marketing products and services through various brokers.
  • Develop, maintain and cultivate broker relationships to ensure positive and profitable outcomes for the segment and line of business.
  • Lead, document, monitor and measure the underwriting team with their broker relationship management.
  • Keep current on territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.
  • Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure that, at a level appropriate to the position, appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance.
  • May perform additional duties as agreed.
  • Complies with corporate and regulatory responsibilities under the remit of Legal Branch Representative.

  • High level of ability to effectively lead, coach and develop underwriting staff.
  • Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
  • Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
  • Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  • Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position.
