SOFICO in Ghent, Belgium is hiring a Software Engineer - Java Backend to join the Product Engineering team and evolve the Miles platform. You will design and build Java backend services, RESTful APIs, and cloud-native solutions using Docker, Kubernetes, and modern Java (17/21), with a focus on DDD and SSDLC.

You’ll collaborate with engineers across disciplines in an international setting and contribute to scalable, secure software while growing your skills through onboarding and ongoing learning.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional backend software development experience.
• Experience building RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Familiarity with microservice architectures and DevOps practices.
• Good understanding of clean, maintainable software design.
• Fluent English in a international engineering environment.
• Experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
• Knowledge of Kafka or similar messaging systems.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with NoSQL datastores.
• Knowledge of Angular or interest in broader stack.
• Knowledge of additional languages besides English.

From our headquarters in Ghent, we’re looking for a Software Engineer - Java Backend to join our Product Engineering team and help shape the continued evolution of the Miles platform.

In this role, you’ll work on the core product capabilities behind Miles, building scalable backend services that are used across customers and markets. You’ll work closely with other engineers, architects and product stakeholders to turn complex business domains into robust, reusable software solutions.

What you’ll do...

Design, develop and evolve Java backend services within the Miles product ecosystem;

Translate complex business domains into well-designed, maintainable software solutions using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles;

Build reusable product capabilities that can serve different customers, markets and use cases;

Design and implement RESTful APIs and integrations between services, internal platforms and other parts of the Miles ecosystem;

Take ownership of what you build throughout its lifecycle - from technical design and development to testing, deployment and continuous improvement;

Build scalable, cloud-native solutions using modern engineering and DevOps practices such as CI/CD, containerization and automated testing;

Collaborate with fellow engineers through technical discussions, code reviews and knowledge sharing;

Apply a security-first mindset when designing and implementing features within our Secure Software Development Life Cycle (SSDLC);

Contribute to technical improvements and architectural decisions that help us continuously evolve the Miles platform.

What you bring...

2+ years of professional experience in backend software development, with hands‑on experience using Java;

Experience with modern Java, preferably Java 17 or Java 21;

Experience building RESTful APIs and backend services;

Familiarity with microservice‑based architectures and modern backend development practices;

A good understanding of clean, maintainable software design;

Good knowledge of SQL, preferably PostgreSQL;

Familiarity with development and DevOps tools and practices such as Git, Maven, Jenkins or GitHub Actions;

A product mindset: you enjoy building software that is reusable, maintainable and designed to evolve over time;

Fluent communication skills in English and the ability to collaborate effectively within an international engineering environment.

Experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD);

Experience with Quarkus or similar modern Java frameworks;

Knowledge of Kafka or other event‑driven/messaging technologies;

Experience with Docker and Kubernetes;

Familiarity with NoSQL datastores;

Experience working on complex software products or platforms;

Knowledge of Angular or an interest in understanding the broader application stack;

Knowledge of additional languages besides English.
