ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, Inc. in Antwerp, Belgium seeks a Senior Ecotoxicologist (PhD/MS) to lead environmental risk assessment efforts at the interface of industry and European regulation.

Qualifications

  • PhD or MS in Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Toxicology, or a related field
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment
  • Strong understanding of chemical fate, persistence, and bioaccumulation assessment
  • Experience with EU regulatory frameworks, including REACH and CLP
  • Ability to integrate complex datasets across hazard, fate, exposure, and ecological systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate science into regulatory strategy and business impact
  • Ability to work effectively across scientific, regulatory, and business environments

What role you will play in our team

ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, Inc. (EMBSI) is seeking a Senior Ecotoxicologist (PhD/MS) to join our team in Antwerp. This role sits at the interface of industry and European regulation, applying advanced scientific expertise to support safe, sustainable, and commercially viable products—particularly for complex petrochemicals and related chemistries The individual will also be expected to support our global team in relevant areas of expertise.

The successful candidate will serve as a scientific leader in ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment, integrating hazard, exposure, and fate data to inform regulatory decision-making. This position requires strong engagement across science, regulatory policy, and business functions, and includes collaboration with EU regulators, industry consortia, and internal stakeholders.

About you
Skills and Qualifications
  • PhD or MS in Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Toxicology, or a related field
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment
  • Strong understanding of chemical fate, persistence, and bioaccumulation assessment
  • Experience with EU regulatory frameworks, including REACH and CLP
  • Ability to integrate complex datasets across hazard, fate, exposure, and ecological systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate science into regulatory strategy and business impact
  • Ability to work effectively across scientific, regulatory, and business environments
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience
  • Experience with UVCBs, petrochemical substances, and difficult to test substances
  • Familiarity with New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and modeling approaches (e.g., QSAR, probabilistic methods)
  • Experience engaging with regulatory agencies, ECHA expert groups, or industry associations (e.g., CONCAWE, Cefic, ECETOC)
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to regulatory strategy and advocacy
What you will do
Ecotoxicology & Risk Assessment Leadership

Provide technical leadership in the application of environmental risk assessment methods to regulatory decision-making:

  • Design and interpret PMT/PBT/vPvB/mobility assessments for complex substances
  • Integrate hazard, exposure, and fate data to assess product environmental impacts
  • Ensure scientific robustness and regulatory alignment of environmental risk assessments
Regulatory Strategy & Framework Support

Support compliance and strategic engagement with EU regulatory frameworks:

  • Contribute to REACH, CLP, and SVHC processes, including substance technical advocacy
  • Develop and communicate regulatory strategies for complex chemistries
  • Translate scientific findings into clear and defensible regulatory positions
External Engagement & Scientific Representation

Engage with regulatory and scientific communities:

  • Interface with EU regulators and ECHA expert groups
  • Participate in industry consortia (e.g., CONCAWE, Cefic, ECETOC)
  • Represent EMBSI in technical discussions and collaborative initiatives
Innovation in Risk Assessment

Advance next-generation scientific approaches:

  • Support implementation of Next-Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) frameworks for petroleum UVCBs
  • Apply and evaluate NAMs and alternative methodologies
  • Contribute to evolving regulatory science for complex substances
Strategic Impact & Decision Support

Support business and regulatory outcomes through scientific insight:

  • Ensure regulatory approaches are fit-for-purpose for complex chemistries
  • Help prevent misclassification, unnecessary testing, and operational constraints
  • Enable market access and product stewardship excellence
Testing Programs & Data Generation

Support development and execution of testing strategies:

  • Design and contribute to testing programs for petroleum related chemistries
  • Ensure data generation aligns with regulatory requirements and scientific best practices
  • Evaluate and incorporate existing and new datasets into regulatory submissions

Work location

This position is based in Antwerp, Belgium with expected, regular, business travel to Brussels.
